Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Christian French has been selected to play in the 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 8 in San Antonio, Texas.

French will be recognized and presented with his game-jersey for the All-Star game during halftime of the Cougars’ game against Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Friday, Oct. 1 at Kingston Stadium.

Below is the email submitted to SourceMedia Group News about the event:

The U.S. Army will be in Cedar Rapids on Friday, October 1st to select a deserving young man to be a part of the 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. This selection is a great honor – only 90 high school football players among the millions in the United States are selected each year. Players are chosen not just because they excel on the football field, but because they embody the same values of our Army Strong Soldiers.

Army representatives will be on-site at Kingston Stadium at 7:15 p.m. on Friday for the kick off of Kennedy’s big game against Jefferson. Near the conclusion of halftime, Christian will be presented with his ceremonial game jersey in front of friends, family and teammates, as well as several thousand well-wishers in the stands. The Army representative who will be presenting Christian with his jersey also has a local connection. Command Sergeant Major Todd Moore starred as a quarterback at Jefferson in the early 1980s. His family still lives in Cedar Rapids.

With his selection, Christian French from Kennedy High School will join an impressive list of U.S Army All-Americans that includes more than 100 first-round NFL draft picks and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. NFL stars such as Adrian Peterson, Mark Sanchez and Vince Young all count themselves among the alumni of the All-American Bowl.

As part of the All-American Bowl, each player selected to play in the game is honored at a Selection Tour event in his hometown. The tour crosses the country through late fall and by its end will have selected 90 players, in addition to 125 band and color guard members who will participate in the game on Jan. 8, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas.

Annually, the All-American Bowl is the Army’s largest public outreach effort, allowing the Army to share its story with tens of millions of people.

  1. I hope he plays better then he playing for us/Kennedy

  2. WOW, is that the best picture you have of him bringing someone down, is ANDRE. That’s sad, Andre off at college. I guess you want to make him look good.

  3. Good decision to wait and present it to him at the Jefferson game, they’ll probably win that one.

  4. That picture explains everything. Arm tackling is his only move. If being a good football player means being fast and tall then Christen is the best player in the state, but when it comes down to it, terrible hands, Scared to hit, and arm tackling….doesn’t sound like a D1 player to me.

  5. I am soo proud of you Christen. I remember you at Wright with may daughter. You are such an awesome athelete. You definately have your mom and dad’s skills.

  6. He had so many troubles attempting to tackle Andre, and he went to a D1 AA team, and Christians expected to go to a great D1 team. How does that work?? He can’t tackle anything over 200 pounds. Shoot he could hardly bring alex down

  7. I simply read the article to see which position he playes. Oops.

  8. For those who are posting comments…remember, this is a high school student! Tacky comments. Congrats to Christian.

  9. Wow – unbelievable. Christian is a good kid with potential..I hope he lives up to the hype. Good luck in the future…big picture, learn to block and catch.

  10. Yep kenngrad he’s not a good football player. You know anyone can flatback a City High tackle on a blitz, and anyone can loop around a line of scrimmage for the backside pursuit. And even you can high step a 80+ yard touchdown run, burn the only pursuit, and come off not breathing hard….

  11. what a joke …..don’t you have to have to have at least a few stats to be invited? Is there a bunch of 300Lb slobs playing PS3 and eating cheetos out there that are invited as OL just because they are heavy?

  12. Kennedyjunior I suggest you go back to cleaning off his cleats and making sure he’s well hydrated

  13. its interesting to see washfball downgrade andre dawson as a running back saying he only went D1 AA. didnt he get multiple D1 offers but choose to go to UNI so his family could watch him? dawson is a great talent and everybody had troubles tackling him. As for christian, colleges are choosing to look at him. they are not being forced to. if you want to degrade him as a player to make yourself feel better because you wish it was you , then thats cool i guess

  14. oh good one kenngrad….when did you come up with that one? im guessing while you were thinking of more ways to completely bash an 18 year-old kid.

  15. sorry i mean washfball

  16. He’s fast and athletic but if he’s gonna be a good d1 player he’ll need to improve his tackling or hands depending on what side of the ball he plays.. Lots of potential could b a big time player if he works hard

  17. As most of you know, last year Christian played safety. I’m and offensive line men but i dont think that he had the chance to make all the big hits when hes in coverage. That was also last year.

This year as a hybrid, he makes more hits and chases on blitzes more.
Also in a little game we call blood alley, he steps in and likes to lay the wood on our defensive line. Now if you can knock over the big hogs up front from a stand still, i’d call that liking to hit.

  18. I actually read some of these posts as filled with backended compliments. Christian’s arm-tackle is indeed a standout move: once you feel his touch, it’s too late: the inevitable Vise Grip is coming, so just save your team’s clock time and hit turf now. I also read that Christian’s unusual speed is so blindingly fast, by the time the ball carrier registers that he’s coming, again it’s too late: moving two steps aside isn’t far enough.

Good thing that true athletes use criticism constructively. I think I’ll just sit back in MY armchair and watch Christian go here, there and up.
