CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER at IOWA CITY HIGH
Time & place: 7:15 p.m., at Bates Field
Records: Both teams are 3-0.
Notable: The Little Hawks share the state’s longest active winning streak, at 17 games. One of those was a 21-3 state-semifinal win over the Saints last year. City High is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A; Xavier is No. 5. City’s Ronald Thompson had a big game last week in a 41-21 win over Iowa City West and has rushed for 452 yards on 55 carries, including eight touchdowns. The Saints have been rugged defensively, allowing 5.7 points per game.
GRINNELL at WILLIAMSBURG
Time & place: 7:30 p.m., at Williamsburg
Records: Both teams are 3-0 overall, 1-0 Class 3A District 6.
Notable: Class 3A top-rated Williamsburg gets its toughest test to date. The Raiders have dominated their first three games by a count of 141-28 and sport an all-state lineman in Iowa recruit Austin Blythe. He leads the way for an attack that features RB Brett Waughop (379 yards, 6 TDs). No. 8 Grinnell is averaging 33 points per game, led by Jordan Ferch (469 rushing yards, 7 TDs).
TURKEY VALLEY at MAQUOKETA VALLEY
Time & place: 7 p.m., at Delhi
Records: Both teams are 3-0 overall, 1-0 Class 1A District 5.
Notable: One of the area’s biggest disappointments last year at 2-7, Maquoketa Valley already has eclipsed that win total. Kyle Whitman leads the Wildcats in rushing (353 yards) and receiving (5 catches, 143 yards). A district champion a year ago, Turkey Valley has moved up to No. 6 in the 1A rankings. The Trojans’ Jordan Mitchell has rushed for 506 yards on 45 carries.
CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON at DUBUQUE WAHLERT
Time & place: 7:15 p.m., at Dubuque
Records: Washington is 3-0; Wahlert is 2-1.
Notable: Class 4A No. 9 Washington survived an upset bid by Cedar Rapids Kennedy last week before prevailing, 21-18. Alex Carr ranks 10th in the state in rushing yards, with 590 (on 83 carries). Carr has scored 10 touchdowns. Wahlert opened at 2-0 before suffering a 34-14 loss to Linn-Mar last week. Riley McCarron leads the Wahlert attack at 413 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
ELKADER CENTRAL at POSTVILLE
Time & place: 7:30 p.m., at Postville
Records: Central is 2-1 overall, 1-0 in Class A District 4; Postville is 3-0, 1-0.
Notable: Central’s Zack Tade is the area’s leading rusher at 678 yards on 84 carries, and ranks fourth statewide in all classes. The Warriors survived an upset bid by winless Edgewood-Colesburg, 13-7, last week. Postville is ranked eighth in Class A. Dallas Imoehl (296 yards) and Cody Jarmes (286) comprise the Pirates’ two-pronged rushing attack.
WAPSIE VALLEY at CLAYTON RIDGE
Time & place: 7:30 p.m., at Guttenberg
Records: Wapsie Valley is 3-0 overall, 1-0 Class 1A District 5; Clayton Ridge is 3-1, 0-1.
Notable: It’s a big game for Clayton Ridge, which suffered a 30-13 loss at Starmont last week and undoubtedly wants to avoid falling further behind the district leaders. The Eagles will have their hands full trying to contain Connor O’Brien, who leads the state in rushing yards per game (240.0). O’Brien has scored 10 touchdowns. Clayton Ridge counters with Jeremy Greve (506 yards on 45 rushes, 10 TDs).
CLEAR CREEK AMANA at SOLON
Time & place: 7:30 p.m., at Solon
Records: Both teams are 2-1 overall, 1-0 in Class 3A District 6.
Notable: After having a 42-game winning streak snapped in Week 2, Solon started a new run last week by fighting past Benton Community, 27-10. J.J. Hanus has competed 73 percent of his passes. Clear Creek Amana’s Dylan Villhauer ranks fifth in the state in passing yards, with 819. He has 10 TD passes, five to Zach Manders, four to Josh Rohret.
LINN-MAR at WATERLOO WEST
Time & place: 7:15 p.m., at Waterloo
Records: Linn-Mar is 3-0; West is 1-2.
Notable: No. 8 Linn-Mar has won 11 of its past 12 regular-season games, and the Lions are favored to extend their run of success. Jer Garman’s 163 rushing yards per game rank third in Class 4A. Tommy Feller leads the defense with 33 tackles, six for loss. West quarterback Austin McMahan has completed 37 of 60 passes for 515 yards with two touchdowns and three INTs.
MONTICELLO at MFL MAR MAC
Time & place: 7:30 p.m., at Monona
Records: Monticello is 3-0 overall, 1-0 Class 2A District 4; MFL MarMac is 1-2, 1-0.
Notable: Monticello has moved into the 2A rankings at No. 9, and the Panthers are coming off a 675-yard explosion in a 45-18 win over Cascade last week. Cody Gullett has rushed for 365 yards, passed for 426. He has accounted for 10 touchdowns. MFL MarMac picked up its first win of the season last week, beating Jesup, 26-14.
IOWA CITY WEST at CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE
Time & place: 7:15 p.m., at John Wall Field
Records: West is 1-2; Prairie is 0-3.
Notable: The records might not be stellar, but this ought to be a competitive, closely matched game. West fought hard before falling to Iowa City High in the Battle for the Boot, 41-21. West is a junior-dominated team, led by Charles Rogers, who has passed for 523 yards and rushed for 278. Prairie battled Cedar Rapids Washington hard for a half and took Cedar Rapids Xavier to the wire before falling, 17-10.
