Gage Heffernan’s 18-yard touchdown reception from Cody Leach with 26 seconds left in regulation lifted Dubuque Hempstead to a 21-17 Mississippi Valley Conference win over Iowa City West Friday night at Dalzell Field.
Leach tossed three touchdown passes for Hempstead (1-1), connecting with Heffernan twice and senior receiver Brad Duwe once.
In a thrilling fourth quarter, West took the lead with 5:28 left on a four-yard touchdown run by Richard Bryant.
Hempstead began its game-winning drive at its own 35-yard line. A key play on the Mustangs’ march came with 3:15 lef when Leach completed an 8-yard slant to Duwe on fourth-and-3.
The Mustangs also converted on another fourth down with 1:11 left to set up Heffernan’s heroics.
West quarterback Charles Rogers rushed for 187 yards to lead West. His 2-yard quarterback sneak gave the Trojans their first lead at 10-7 with 10:18 left in the fourth quarter.
Rogers finished 7-for-13 passing for 118 yards.
How bad is KCRG’s source of information? Mark Plath is #4 for West, not Hempstead, and he plays DB/WR, not QB. Mondo Williams also plays for West, not Hempstead.
Hey #4 for Hempstead is Cody Leach. I know everyone makes mistakes but he surely deserves the credit. Thanks!!!!
It is sad that the boys names were wrong – Hempstead QB – Cody Leach – #5 on the first reception Brad Duwe.
Lets clean up the clip and get it right!
It is sad that Cody Leach is up for Athelete of the week – and no one will know who he is – except those from Dubuque!
