Askelson one shot back after Round 1

Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Kimmy Askelson is one shot off the lead after the first round of the Class 4A girls state golf tournament at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.

Askelson shot a 75 and sits in second place, heading into Wednesday’s second round. Katie Purcell of Ames is first with a 74. Western Dubuque’s Ali Daly is eighth, carding an 82 in the opening round. Iowa City West’s Madison Goodfellow shot 85, while teammate Brookelyn Klemesrud scored 87. Marshalltown leads Waukee, 346-348, in the team race. Ames is third at 351.

In the Class 3A meet, also at Otter Creek, Waukon’s Morgan McMillan was in a four-way tie for second at 83. The second-place quartet was three shots back of Charles City freshman Jessie Sindlinger. Oelwein’s Katie O’Loughlin was tied for seventh with an 85. South Tama’s Taylor Van Dyk and Independence’s MacKenzie Black shot, 86 and 87, respectively. The team race is tight in 3A. Grinnell leads with 365. Carroll and Clear Lake are close at 367 and 368.

At Adel’s River Valley Golf Course, Mid-Prairie is fifth in the Class 2A team race with a 402,. Cascade is one spot back with 412. Clarinda holds the team lead at 383 and Carroll Kuemper is second with 386. Keslie Berg shot 87 to pace the Hawks and stands in ninth place. Dyersville Beckman’s Ellie Ament is in a three-way tied for second with an 82. Fort Dodge St Edmund’s Kelsey Faiferlick is first after Day 1 with an 80.

Central City’s Christy Nelson and Elkader Central’s Jenna Koehn are tied with one other for third with an 84, which is seven shots back of second and 10 back of leader Jocilyn Onnen of Grundy Center, which leads the team race with 353. Algona Garrigan is second at 362 in the 1A meet held at River Valley as well.

We will be at the second rounds of the Class 3A and 4A tournaments at Ankeny’s Otter Creek Golf Course Wednesday.
