Boys and girls tennis teams will take the court Saturday, vying for spots at the state team tournament. Boys teams will compete in substate semifinals and finals, while girls team will continue regional tournament play.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy hosts a pair of postseason meets in attempt to continue its long-standing tradition state meet appearances.
The Cougars boys team will host a Class 2A substate semifinal against Waterloo West at Coe College at 9 a.m. Linn-Mar hosts Cedar Rapids Washington at 9 a.m. The winners will compete in the substate final and a state championship berth at Coe, approximately at 1 p.m. or no earlier than one hour after the conclusion of the last semifinal match.
The boys’ success has been fairly recent.Under first-year boys head coach Craig Bova, Kennedy, led by returning singles state placewinner and district singles champ, Jeff Damisch, will attempt to make its way to a third-straight team state. The Cougars were third last year after winning their first state title in 2008.
Linn-Mar will also contend. The Lions beat Kennedy earlier in the season. The Lions are powered strong doubles play, including state qualifiers Tyler McCann and Mitch Anderson, who should match up with Washington state duo Charlie Hammond and Mitch Blades.
In other 2A action, Iowa City High hosts Iowa City West, Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley. The Little Hawks will face Bettendorf in the semifinal round with the Trojans taking on the Spartans. Winners will compete for a state berth.
The Kennedy girls’ have had a little more with four top-3 state team finishes since 2004, including a state title in 2007 and a runner-up finish in 2006.
Kennedy hosts Cedar Falls in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal at 9 a.m. Cedar Rapids Washington hosts Waterloo West at 9 a.m. The winners advance to a regional semifinal set for 1 p.m. or no earlier than an hour after the last semifinal.
Both Kennedy and Washington blanked their quarterfinal opponents earlier this season, which could lead to a rematch with both teams trying to reach Monday’s regional final at Iowa City High. The Cougars won, 6-3, previously against the Warriors.
City High travels to Pleasant Valley for its quarterfinal and could face the winner of Ottumwa and Clinton in the Region 4 semfinals.
In Region 3, Cedar Rapids Xavier takes on Davenport North at Bettendorf at 9 a.m. The winner will play the winner between Bettendorf and Linn-Mar. Cedar Rapids Jefferson hosts half the bracket, including Dubuque Hempstead, Davenport Central and Iowa City West.
The J-Hawks take on the Mustangs and the Women of Troy play Central in the quarterfinals, starting at 9 a.m.
In Class 1A, Decorah travels to Waverly for a regional semifinal against Waverly-Shell Rock. Union Community plays Camanche in a 1A Region 4 quarterfinal at City High.
