Kennedy claims win to open team tennis regional

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars girls tennis team opened the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union’s Class 2A Region 4 play Saturday, May 15, with a 5-1 home win over Marshalltown.

The Cougars advance to face Cedar Falls in the regional quarterfinals this Saturday at Kennedy. The winner will play the winner between Waterloo West and Cedar Rapids Washington. Iowa City High plays at Pleasant Valley in another regional quarterfinal with that winner playing the winner between Ottumwa and Clinton.

In 2A Region 3, Cedar Rapids Xavier started its postseason last weekend as well, blanking Cedar Rapids Prairie, 5-0, and moving on to a quarterfinal match against Davenport North at Bettendorf. The winner faces the winner of the Linn-Mar at Bettendorf quarterfinal. The remainder of the Region 3 quarters will be held at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The J-Hawks play Dubuque Hempstead, while Iowa City West takes on Davenport Central.

In Class 1A, Decorah has advanced to the Region semifinals and plays Waverly-Shell Rock Saturday at Waverly. The Vikings advanced with a 5-0 win over Osage before beating Charles City, 5-2.

Western Dubuque won an opening round match, 5-0, against Maquoketa, but then dropped a 5-0 decision to Dubuque Wahlert in a 1A Region 3A quarterfinal. Wahlert also handed Independence a 5-0 loss in the opening round.

Union Community is alive in 1A Region 4 after a 5-3 win over Marion in the first round. The Knights have a quarterfinal match Saturday against Camanche, who beat Mount Vernon-Lisbon, 5-0, to advance.
