CEDAR RAPIDS — Remember the last time Morgan Paige and Carli Tritz were on the same floor at the same time?
Both stars put on a show of brilliance in Sioux City Heelan’s 69-61 Class 3A quarterfinal win over Marion at the girls’ state basketball tournament last month.
They’ll be together again Saturday, on different terms.
The annual six-game Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-star series is this weekend at the Hennessey Recreation Center on the Mount Mercy College campus.
More than 100 of the state’s best seniors will gather. Tritz and Paige are the creme de la creme.
They will play together on the 3A Select team, which faces 4A Select in the spotlight game at 2:15 Saturday afternoon.
The series begins at 12:30 p.m., when 3A White meets 3A Gray. The 4A non-select teams play at 4.
Small-school action begins at 1 p.m. Sunday.
A Creighton signee, Tritz was named Miss Iowa Basketball after leading Heelan to the 3A championship. Paige has signed with Wisconsin.
“We’re on a talking basis. We both went on a recruiting trip at Drake together,” Paige said.
When they met in March, Paige tallied 34 points, a state-tournament 3A record. Tritz collected 23 points and nine assists.
The original 120-player roster has been decimated somewhat by postseason injuries.
“There have probably been four or five girls that have torn ACLs,” said tournament organizer Larry Niemeyer, the coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
“It’s like an epidemic.”
Other top-flight players include Jade Rogers of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, who will play for 4A Select, and Hallie Christofferson of 1A state champion Exira. She’ll play for the 1A White team.
