Saturday’s slate features 1-vs.-2 showdowns

DES MOINES — So we’re down to 1-vs.-2.

The girls’ state basketball tournament concludes today with a pair of championship-game showdowns.

In Class 3A, top-rated Sioux City Heelan (25-1) faces No. 2 Waukon (25-1) at 6 p.m.

And in 4A, it’s No. 1 Linn-Mar (25-0) vs. No. 2 Des Moines East (25-0) at 8.

“We just don’t have a lot of size,” said Waukon Coach Gene Klinge. “Our kids will play hard. They’ll battle hard. But we’ll have our hands full.”

Heelan and Waukon have been 1-2 all season.

“Heelan is a great team,” said Waukon’s Mary Halvorson. “We’ve got to play tough defense. We’ve just got to go out and play ball. I’m sure Coach will have a great game plan.”

Klinge is the state’s all-time winningest coach with 956 wins.

As for Linn-Mar, this is the stage for which the Lions have been striving all season. Or longer.

“This has been one of my goals the entire time I’ve been here,” said senior Kayla Klopfenstein. “(Getting here) is nice to accomplish, but we’re not done yet.”

Quite a quartet

Sportswriters gather downtown today to select the Iowa Newspaper Association all-state teams. The top prize is Miss Iowa Basketball 2010, given to the top senior, and there’s a front-running field of four.

Morgan Paige averaged 25.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as Marion finished 23-2 and reached the state tournament. In a 3A quarterfinal loss to Heelan, she scored 34 points. She’ll play at Wisconsin.

Carli Tritz of Heelan has her team playing for the 3A title tonight. She averaged 22.5 points, 6.6 assists and 6.1 steals per game and shot 66 percent from the field. She’ll play at Creighton.

Hallie Christofferson of Exira was a dominant force as the Vikettes reached last night’s 1A title game. She averaged 26.6 points and 15.6 rebounds. She’ll attend Iowa State.

Jade Rogers led Cedar Rapids Kennedy to the 4A semifinals. She posted 18.3 points and 10.9 boards per game. She’ll play at Iowa.

The all-state teams generally are released the Wednesday after the state tournament.

4 Responses to Saturday’s slate features 1-vs.-2 showdowns

  1. My picks:
Heelan by 10+ …. Nobody to stop Tritz or Niggeling

Linn Mar …. Kiah Stokes … Do I have to say more?

    Miss Basketball:
    Paige or Tritz
    Both are phenomenal

  2. Agree with the rankings or not, the IGHSAU got it right this year. At least for 3A and 4A.

  3. If Linn-Mar & DM East have same record why is Linn-Mar rated over DM ?

  4. Responding to HIAWATHA:
“If Linn-Mar & DM East have same record why is Linn-Mar rated over DM ?”

Perhaps because their strength of schedule is stronger, their average margin of vicory is greater, etc., etc., etc,…. Sort of how they rank teams in any sport. (I take it you don’t follow sports that much?)
