CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP
#2 Waukon (25-1) vs. #1 Sioux City Heelan (25-1)
Time: 6 p.m.
Coaches: Waukon Coach Gene Klinge is the winningest coach in state history. He has a 48-year record of 956-218 with 16 state appearances. Darron Koolstra is in his first year at Heelan and is 25-1.
Top players: Mary Halvorson (5-11, sr.) paces Waukon at 17.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Logan Hjerleid (5-7, sr.) adds 9.7 ppg. Carli Tritz (5-11, sr.) averages Heelan at 22.7 points per game and shoots better than 66 percent from the floor. Millie Niggeling (6-1, sr.) adds 14.9 ppg. The Heelan duo is headed to Creighton and Vermont.
How they got here: Waukon advanced with victories over Knoxville (61-50) and Algona (53-46). Heelan beat Marion, 69-61, in Round 1, then eliminated Ballard, 59-54.
CLASS 4A CHAMPIONSHIP
#1 Linn-Mar (25-0) vs. #2 Des Moines East (25-0)
Time: 8 p.m.
Coaches: Mike Brandt is 146-62 in nine seasons at Linn-Mar. Sam Powell is 106-35 in six years at East.
Top players: Kiah Stokes (6-3, jr.) paces Linn-Mar at 19.3 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. Kayla Klopfenstein (5-9, sr.) adds 12.1 points per game. Shronda Butts (5-7, jr.) is East’s leader at 14.4 points per game. Markisha Wright (6-2, jr.) adds 13.3 points and 8.8 boards per game.
How they got here: Linn-Mar advanced with a 60-38 win over Johnston in the quarterfinals and a 58-53 triumph over Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the semifinals. East got here with wins over Ames (49-37) and Waukee (50-49).
