CLASS 2A QUARTERFINAL
Mount Vernon (22-3) vs. #11 Audubon (21-1)
Time: 11:30 a.m.
Coaches: Mount Vernon Coach Bob Kintzel is in his third season, and owns a 57-11 mark. Derek Sonderland is 81-33 in five years at Audubon. He also had a successful run at Tri-Center.
Top players: Liz Skotowski (5-7, soph.) paces a young Mount Vernon team, averaging 12.0 points per game. Amanda Platte (6-1, jr.) adds 10.2 ppg. Mykel Brannan (5-6, sr.) leads Audubon at 17.8 points per game. Brittni Obermeier (5-9, sr.) adds 12.4 ppg.
State tournament history: Mount Vernon is making its five-player debut. The Mustangs qualified as a six-player outfit in 1984. Audubon is in the field for the 18th time. The Wheelers have won five titles, most recently in 1999.
CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS
#8 Marion (23-1) vs. #1 Sioux City Heelan (23-1)
Time: 1 p.m.
Coaches: Sherryl Paige has a 126-95 record in 10 years at Marion. She previously coached at Anamosa. Darron Koolstra is in his first year at Heelan and is 23-1.
Top players: This game matches two of the state’s best individuals. Marion’s Morgan Paige (5-10, sr.) is the top 3A scorer at 24.9 points per game. Brittany Fish (5-6, sr.) adds 13.2 ppg. Heelan’s Carli Tritz (5-11, sr.) averages 22.7 points per game while Millie Niggeling (6-1, sr.) adds 14.9 ppg. Paige will play at Wisconsin, Tritz at Creighton, Niggeling at Vermont.
State tournament history: Marion is making its second appearance. The Indians were semifinalists in 2008. Heelan is here for the fifth time. The Crusaders were 2008 3A champions and runners-up in 2009.
#2 Waukon (23-1) vs. #12 Knoxville (23-1)
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Coaches: Waukon’s Gene Klinge is the all-time winningest coach in state history at 954-218 with 16 state appearances in 48 years. He won the 2004 title in his first year at Waukon. Jim Uitermarkt is 59-11 in three years at Knoxville.
Top players: Mary Halvorson (5-11, sr.) leads a veteran Waukon squad at 17.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Logan Hjerleid (5-7, sr.) adds 9.7 ppg. Sam Abens (5-8, sr.) paces Knoxville at 14.8 ppg; Alex Abens (5-9, jr.) adds 11.5 ppg.
State tournament history: Waukon is making its fifth trip to Des Moines. The Indians were 3A champions in 2004. They were semifinalists last year. Knoxville advanced for the fourth time, the first since 1975.
