Cedar Rapids Washington will host its Hall of Fame night Friday between games of its girls’/boys’ basketball doubleheader with Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

The debate came to a conclusion Wednesday, for now at least. A.J. Derby will play quarterback at Iowa.
This is from Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz also called Derby, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder a “Tim Tebow” type of athlete. He also said if Iowa changes its style of offense to accommodate Derby’s skills, so be it.
“That’s our intent is for him to play quarterback,” Ferentz said at his signing day news conference. “We’re eager to see how he can progress and improve.

District games begin Monday, Feb. 15. Games also will be played on Feb. 18, 23 and 25.
District finals in 1A are the 25th, in 2A the 23rd.
Top seeds in Class 1A include Iowa Mennonite, Lynnville-Sully, Clinton Prince of Peace, Lone Tree and Elkader Central.
In Class 2A, they include MFL/Mar-Mac, Cascade, North Cedar and BGM.
By far, the most interesting district is Class 2A, District 9, where you’ve got North Cedar, Solon and Iowa City Regina. Solon and Regina are earmarked for a second-round game Feb. 18 that could be a dandy.

Morgan Paige saw open lanes to the basket. And she saw opportunity.
Paige set a school record with 43 points in Marion’s 80-64 girls’ basketball win over Benton Community on Tuesday.
The University of Wisconsin signee surpassed Kristin Popovics’ standard of 41, hitting two free throws with 8 seconds on the clock.
“It was kind of nerve-wracking. I didn’t know I was that close until the crowd erupted when I hit a layup to tie the record,” Paige said.
“They were leaving wide-open lanes to drive.”

Dyersville Beckman’s Tony Naber became just the second Blazer to win a Wamac Conference title with a solid 7-1 victory over West Delaware’s P.C. McEnany in the 125-pound final Saturday at Benton Community in Van Horne.
Matt Heims won the 145-pound title in 2006 for Beckman.
Naber wasn’t seeded in the top three but advanced to the final when Western Dubuque’s Jim Gotto, ranked third in 3A, injury defaulted. Naber, the school record holder for wins in a season (37 in 2008-09) had a pin and major decision in the tournament while improving …

Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Prairie have won Mississippi Valley Conference division crowns a second straight year.
With Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s win over Waterloo West last night, the Trojans locked up the MVC Mississippi Division title. West is 26-1 overall and 6-0 in the MVC, ending conference competition tonight at Dubuque Hempstead against the Mustangs and Waterloo West. It’s the fourth straight title and 10th overall for West, which owns a 30-dual MVC win streak dating to 2006.
Prairie was the last MVC team to beat West. The Hawks are 17-2 …
