IOWA CITY — Virginia Johnson’s voice quivered, but her choice never wavered.
An all-state junior forward at Iowa City High, Johnson orally committed to play women’s basketball at the University of Iowa Sunday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
“I was really nervous telling Coach (Lisa) Bluder,” Johnson said moments after being mobbed by her future teammates. “My voice was shaking.
“I was raised here. I have a picture of me (wearing) a Hawkeye shirt when I was 2 years old.”
Johnson, who stands 6-foot-1, is averaging 23.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for City High (8-6). She’s shooting 53 percent from the field, 70 percent from the free throw line.
She was a freshman when the Little Hawks won the Class 4A state championship in 2008, scoring the winning basket against Cedar Rapids Washington on a layup as time expired.
Kelly Krei also was on that team. They’ll be reunited at Iowa in 2011-12, when Krei is a senior and Johnson a freshman.
Johnson said she picked Iowa over Rutgers.
“(Recruiting) has been a never-ending pressure,” she said. “After a while, it starts to get to you.”
