Rivalry Saturday could include a moment of history

CEDAR RAPIDS — Scot Moenck chose Waukon and MFL MarMac as a Rivalry Saturday matchup simply because … well, because both teams are darn good.

He may have stumbled onto a historical moment.

Waukon Coach Gene Klinge goes after his 939th career victory in the 4:30 game at the U.S. Cellular Center.

That would give him sole possession of the all-time record among Iowa girls’ basketball coaches. Currently, he shares the mark with the late Bob Mullen.

“I didn’t expect Coach Klinge to have a chance to break it on our night,” said Moenck, event organizer and coach at Maquoketa Valley. “Lucky for us. I’m just glad we might get to be a part of it.”

Two weather-related postponements delayed Klinge’s assault on the record. Waukon is 7-1; MFL MarMac 6-1.

The sixth annual six-game package begins at 11:15 a.m., and as is typically the case, the day is fraught with great matchups.

Eight of the 12 teams are ranked. All of them are .500 or better, and the field has a composite record of 76-18 (.809).

“I knew all the teams we picked had a lot of potential,” Moenck said. “We’ve got some great teams, great coaches, great players.”

The spotlight game is at 6:15, when Class 4A No. 3 Linn-Mar (7-0) faces 3A No. 3 Davenport Assumption (5-1).

Three games are league contests, and the 11:15 game is a matchup of Tri-Rivers unbeatens — North Linn (7-1, 5-0) vs. Cascade (6-1, 5-0).

“I’m a little pleasantly surprised,” said North Linn Coach Brian Wheatley. “I wasn’t sure what we had at the beginning of the season, and I’m still not sure. But we’ve put ourselves in a good spot, and it will be interesting to see how we match up.”

Unlike last year, the Lynx are healthy. Brandy Zumbach is back after missing all of 2008-09 with a torn ACL. Shannon Waring missed nine games with a broken finger.

“Those two make a big difference,” Wheatley said.

In other games, Anamosa (8-0, 3-0) faces DeWitt Central (7-3, 3-1) in a Wamac East contest at 1 p.m., Monticello (7-3, 4-2) meets Maquoketa Valley (6-2, 5-1) in a Tri-Rivers battle at 2:45 and Marion (6-1) tangles with Dubuque Wahlert (4-4) in a non-conference game at 8.
