John Chelf turned to his mom, who was standing nearby, after he was told how many trips to the charity stripe he had made.
“I had 17 free throws. Wow!” the Iowa City High guard told mom.
There were a lot of “wow” factors in the finale of Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center. Let’s start with City High’s 77-63 win over Cedar Rapids Washington.
These teams played Jan. 8 in Cedar Rapids, with the Warriors winning by 30 points. Talk about turning the tables.
“Our mindset that first game, we really weren’t …
Benton, Boys Basketball, Jeff Johnson, Marion »
You hate to refer to it again, but when you talk about Marion’s season, you’ve got to talk about that Williamsburg game. The Indians blew a 20-plus point lead and lost by two just before Christmas.
There’s been nary a defeat since then. Marion won its ninth in a row Saturday, drilling Benton Community, 70-48, as part of Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center.
“We knew right then that we had to play together,” said Marion’s Kasey Semler, who led his team with 17 points. “It seems like ever since that …

DUBUQUE — Iowa City West Coach Mark Reiland said it was one of those days. A satisfactory effort, but nothing spectacular from his Trojans.
Other Mississippi Valley Conference teams may beg to differ and would likely exchange outcomes any day.
West crowned five champions, tallying 244½ points, to win its seventh straight MVC tournament title Saturday at Dubuque Senior. The Trojans finished a massive 89 points ahead of runner-up Linn-Mar.
The approach is the same every year, according to West senior Nick Moore.
“It’s come in and score as many points as possible,” Moore …

CEDAR RAPIDS — This is a big weekend for Tanner Miller. He’s having an official visit with the University of Iowa football program, taking a tour of U of I facilities Saturday morning and hanging out with a Hawkeye player Saturday night.
But the young man has his priorities, and Saturday afternoon that was to be with his Mid-Prairie basketball team.
“I couldn’t miss this game,” Miller said after he helped the Golden Hawks past rival Iowa City Regina, 57-48, during Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center. “They probably would have …
Central City, Jeff Johnson, Monticello, Prep Sports »
If you listened real close, you heard John Rochford call “bank.”
OK, the beefy 6-foot-4 Central City center didn’t call his banked, game-winning, buzzer-beating jumper from just outside the free-throw line. But he’ll take it and that 48-46 win over Monticello at Rivalry Saturday.
“They defended what we wanted to do really well,” Rochford said. “I came out from the block, just tried to make a play. Catch it at the top.
“That’s a little out of my range, probably 15 to 18 feet. But I got the shot and it was good. When I shot …
Boys Basketball, Jeff Johnson, North Cedar »
It was a busy week for the North Cedar Knights, but it turned out to be a really good one.
The eighth-ranked team in Class 2A won three times, surviving a lackluster first half to topple Lisbon, 63-51, to open Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center.
It was the 15th-straight win for North Cedar (16-1), which had a big overtime victory Friday night over Mid-Prairie. Maybe that contributed to a 31-25 halftime deficit to Lisbon (8-9), eh head coach Scott Jackson?
“I don’t know,” Jackson said. “That was a tough game last night against Mid-Prairie. …

MARION — Kiah Stokes was highly efficient, if not wildly prolific.
Stokes took only eight shots from the floor Friday night, but made every last one of them as Class 4A top-rated Linn-Mar won its 30th straight Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game, 48-34, over No. 12 Cedar Rapids Xavier at Linn-Mar High School.
“They were physical, so I wanted to be physical right back,” said Stokes, who scored 19 points in front of hopeful suitors like Iowa State women’s coach Bill Fennelly and two coaches from Purdue.
“Once I got the ball, I …
