Waverly-Shell Rock flexes muscle at Prairie

CEDAR RAPIDS — Wrestling teams competing in duals resemble chains. They’re only as strong as their weakest link.

Waverly-Shell Rock has six elite wrestlers, favored to win almost every time out, but the rest of the lineup exhibited the Go-Hawks’ sturdiness.

Class 3A second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock went 3-0, including a 40-24 win over No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie, to win the Holiday Wrestling Classic dual tournament Saturday at Prairie.

“I thought we were more consistent today than we have been,” Waverly-Shell Rock Coach Rick Caldwell said. “Those kids who aren’t the returning state placewinners, we need consistency out of those guys who can win some hard-fought matches, keep it close with a guy who is maybe better and give themselves a chance to win.”

The Go-Hawks big guns went 3-0, including Tanner Werner at 112, former state finalists Eric DeVos (119) and Jordan Rinken (130) and defending state champions Jake Ballweg (135), Cody Caldwell (140) and Cody Krumwiede (215). Andrew Steiert (103), Kolton Rottink (125) and Anthony Walther (160) provided some firepower also, going unbeaten for the Go-Hawks (9-1).

“I thought we wrestled pretty hard for the most part,” Caldwell said. “Obviously, you never wrestle well enough to be completely happy, but we did a pretty good job today.”

The Go-Hawks won nine matches against Prairie, winning two battles between state medalists to build a 25-0 lead.

Top-ranked Rinken used a takedown in the second and rode out Trevor Hardin, turning him for three nearfall points to break a 3-3 tie, and claimed a 6-3 win at 130.

“He doesn’t get rattled,” Caldwell said of Rinken. “He competes really hard from start to finish.”

Ballweg, ranked No. 1 at 140, claimed a 10-1 over No. 2 Jake Rizzio at 135. Both were active, but Ballweg pulled away in the final two periods.

“I didn’t like how I wrestled on my feet,” said Ballweg, a University of Iowa recruit. “I need to work on some stuff, but once I got in the top position I liked how I wrestled there.”

Ballweg was tough on top, scoring two nearfall in the second for a 2-0 lead. He pulled away, scoring six points in a flurry in the last period.

“(I was) just going by feel and continuous wrestling,” Ballweg said of the an escape, takedown and three nearfall in the third. “I wasn’t thinking too much.”

Ninth-ranked Steiert edged No. 10 Zach Becicka, 2-0, with a reversal in the second double-overtime period to end the meet.

“I was most proud of little Steiert,” Caldwell said. “He’s just a freshman. He’s shown some toughness.”

The Hawks won five of six weights before Steiert’s win, pulling within 13 points twice.

Peyton Wagner (152) and Andrew Netolicky (189) scored pins. Zach Witte (145), Alex Steenblock (171) and heavyweight Dillon Brunscheen collected wins.

One of the differences in the dual was mat wrestling, according to Prairie Coach Blake Williams. The Go-Hawks won the battle on the mat, controlling Prairie on top and being able to get out from underneath.

“The effort and fight were there,” Williams said. “It’s just now they have to get better technically if we want a chance to improve the next time we see them.”

Waverly-Shell Rock rolled through the first two rounds, winning 22 of 28 weights, including 19 by pin or technical fall, to beat Cedar Falls, 59-18, and Mount Vernon, 65-15.

“We got a lot of bonus points,” Caldwell said.

The Hawks (7-1) beat Mount Vernon, 58-11, and Cedar Falls, 52-24, tallying 17 pins and technical falls and two majors.

“We can take some positives out of (today) that’s for sure,” Williams said. “The kids realize, too, we have a lot to work on.”

Josh Haug went 3-0 at 171 and Nelson Jerabek (119) and Jimmy Thomsen had two wins apiece for Mount Vernon (0-6).

  1. Nice job by CRP and WSR today. Even though listed, Ryan Cox (ranked at 160) was not in the lineup for Mount Vernon today…neither was Matt Winder (not listed, but ranked at 152).

  2. Dave,
These results are straight off the official bout sheets from the host school. They have Cox listed for both the C.R. Prairie and Cedar Falls duals. If Cox did not wrestle, please ask Coach Light, Coach Dix or Coach Truitt to contact me and let me know who wrestled.

  3. No biggie KJ…just wanted to clarify for anyone that was wondering where two of MV’s leading wrestlers were at. I think Cox was a Saturday morning scratch…something that will always lead to confusion on the bout sheets.
