  1. The selection of All State teams is a joke. The Cedar Rapids Gazette’s team is way heavy in MVC players, with a ridiculous number of complete nobodies from Cedar Rapids schools just thrown in. The Des Moines Register’s 4A All State team (below) reflects the same bias toward the CIML and metro Des Moines area kids.

The All Conference teams are an even bigger joke, with the coaches that lobby hard for their kids getting them recognized while more passive coaches’ kids go unrecognized.

If there’s not a more objective and credible way of evaluating talent and recoggnizing those players that deserve to be recognized, these annual farces should just be skipped altogether.

  2. Congratulations to all that made the All-State List. For the rest of the players, coaches and fans that may be scratching their heads at some of the selections, don’t take this list too seriously. Individual football awards are one part performance and one part politics. There are 48 teams in 4A and no coach, fan or reporter has the time to watch all the top players from each team. As a result of the selection system, 15 of the 28 available first team positions were filled by players from only 4 teams! City High had fewer 1st team selections than WDMD, Marshalltown and CR Wash. No doubt these are good players on the list. I’ve seen a number of them play and many are very good. Others that I’ve seen play leave me scratching my head. You can be sure that their coaches are great lobbyists. To conclude that this is a definitive list of the best football players in the state (or that one can even be created) is a big stretch. If you want to leave no doubt that you are the best, go out for wrestling, track or some other sport were the competition is head to head or the results are measureable.

  3. MVC FAN: What’s your solution??

  4. JL – I’d love to see a system in which the players vote for who they believe are the best players. That would have its limitations too, because most players are only exposed to players in their conference. However, I still think it would be more meaningful to the players to know they earned the respect of their opponents on the field.

  5. Mvc fan you need take up gambling or find a hobby besides criticizing high school kids. maybe fantasyfootball.

  6. Not taking anything away from the kids who made it, I find it odd that Wash and Marshalltown each got 2 kids on the 1st Team Defense while Xavier and City High only got 1 each. Xavier’s and City’s defenses were the best two in 4A all year. Wash gave up 65 points and City’s all-time best yards in a game and 41 pts to Linn-Mar. Marshalltown gave up 42 pts and over 400 yds to City.

What is the criteria for making an All State on defense?

  7. Mr.Carr I don’t believe mvc fan is being critical of the kids but he is right on target with his comments whether you like it or not.

  8. Des Moines Lincoln had good players out of of T.J. James RB and Zach Mcceland OL. How did the kid from Davenport Assumption get it over T.J. James. T.J. had way better stats then him. I think All State selections arent fair at times not giving kids chances who really deserve it.

  9. From mvc fans other post he seems to be a little to critical sometimes. You might be right but you can make that argument on any level of sports

  10. JL – Any time there is a vote, there will be politics (by definition). That’s why I commented in my earlier post that only in measureable sports like track and individual head to head sports like wrestling can you determine who is “the best” on the day they compete. Getting back to football and the players’ poll I would like to see, one of the restrictions in a players’ poll could be that a player would only be allowed to vote for people on teams they played against: i.e. a player could not vote for a teammate. The integrity of the vote depends on the integrity of the players. I don’t advocate vacating the current All State selection process as imperfect as it is, but I do believe a players’ poll would be a great source of pride and a better indicator of excellence) for players.

  11. The idea of having players vote on all-state teams is irrational at best. This would never work.

What about fans voting? Turn it into a popularity contest like the MLB all-star game…that doesn’t work either although the managers generally get the right guys added to the team as non-starters. However, every year you can guaranty that at least 2-3 starters on each team are having average seasons at best…

I’m not sure the existing all-state picking system is all that broken. Quality coaches view tons of opponent game film each week and discuss their findings with their assistants, players, and the press. They know who is good in their respective leagues. Quality coaches are also friends with other non-opponent quality coaches and I assume they share information across league/county borders. The same can be said about the press and their relationships with their colleagues across the state. These guys talk and they give their honest opinions on who they think is deserving…pretty simple stuff….could be a little political at times….but I don’t know how you could improve it so long as the coaches and press are being honest.

  12. Dave, your condescending comment was off target.

The implication that there is this great network of all knowing coaches and writers capable of creating a definitive list of the best players at every position in the state is irrational. That is the fallacy of the current system and the reason everyone should take the INA and the Des Moines Register lists as entertaining works of fiction. As I said in an earlier post, even to think such a list can be made by any method is a big stretch. For example, I challenge anyone to provide definitive proof that the 5 excellent offensive linemen named 1st team all-state in the INA list are, in fact, the best 5 in the state…or do the same with the 5 linemen named 1st team in the Des Moines Register list since the lists don’t agree.

No where did I say to have the players select an All State Team. The great majority of players only have exposure to players in their conference. That is where a players’ poll has meaning. I suggested the players’ poll in addition to the current system. The current system has some entertainment value as long as you don’t take it too seriously. As an example of what I’m suggesting, I’d love to see the Gazette do an MVC players’ poll.

By the way, you better call the NFL and tell them to stop having players vote for pro bowl selections (players, fans & coaches each get 1/3 say): players voting is irrational.

  13. Recordit: I agree with your comment that an accurate list “by any method” is very difficult. In fact, it is impossible. Too many variables involved…what is perceived as valuable to one coach/sportswriter may be completely different to another.

Biggest mistake I see is the D-I guys or early commitment guys that have lackluster seasons…In my mind an “All-State” player is one that had a terrific season, not one that signed early with the Cyclones, Hawks, or Panthers. Who is to say that a 5’11″ 210 lb OT that played flawlessly every game and paved the way for a 1500 yd rusher didn’t have a better season than the 6’4″ 260 OT that missed 3 games to injury and played at 80% in the other 6 games but already signed his LOI…obviously the upside on the D-I kid is tremendous, but he might not be as deserving of “All-State” accolades as the smaller OT that eventually ends up at D-III or may never play again.

I don’t have an issue with player voting process in the NFL. That is a completely different monster. I’m sorry you took my comment on h.s. player voting as condescending…that wasn’t my intention.

    I

  14. I like seeing all-state teams. Our problem really just comes down to east vs. west. We only have one game to judge each other, why even try to pick who better than who.

Changing the topic to David Ryberg at Xavier. He was the best football player I have watched in a long time. He was unblockable and played with such tenacity. He played mean. If I had a vote an MVC MVP I wouldn’t think twice about making it Ryberg.

  15. Congrats to all the kids on the all-star teams and congrats to the teams that played extra games this season. The high school football season provides a great atmosphere for the welcome back to school and leaves any fan eager for “next year”. The selection of all-star teams is a fitting way to close the old year and start the looking ahead. Is it perfect? Nope. Does it need to be? Nope.

Agreed on Ryberg. He could be a Division I safety with his mix of speed and strength on top of a tremendous nose for the football.

  16. Are there any Xavier folks out there who know what Ryberg’s plans are for next year?

72DAD, if other posters read your comment without watching him play, they’d think you’re crazy, a lineman playing safety D1. I wouldn’t doubt he could do it though.

  17. Don’t you understand that it’s high time to get the home loans, which will help you.
