Linn-Mar powered by youth and offseason involvement

The Linn-Mar Lions return quite a few letterwinners from last season. Even the 13 returning letterwinners are relatively young.

With the likes of juniors Jeremy Severin and Mac Mahmens, seniors Michael Green and Dailey Johnson and sophomores Mark Atwater and Mitch Wantock there is talent. Linn-Mar could be a tough team to face. A team that might be a work in progress and much better in late-January or early-February than at the season’s start.

One bright spot about the Lions is the time many dedicated in the offseason. The Lions were the subject of some chatter about their participation in spring wrestling, going to camps and competing in freestyle tournaments. Linn-Mar Coach Doug Streicher noted that it was the largest group of wrestlers to be involved in the offseason during his tenure at the school.

The influence of offseason wrestling will be evident once varsity competition rolls around. Offseason wrestling is important to improve mat awareness and positioning. Only as the season progresses will the Lions see the fruits of their labor.

  1. Come on KJ, Mark Atwater is a sophomore. Football season wasn’t that long ago. Are there mulligan’s in sports reporting?

  2. Thanks for the catch, Lion Fan. Simple error in cutting-and-pasting a group of names while posting about 15 videos. It’s changed.
