Top ranked North Tama blanks WACO
CEDAR FALLS – Brendon Boermer plays shooting guard for the North Tama boys’ basketball team. But it’s at football where his point guard skills excel.
Boerm pitched, passed, ran and faked his way through and around the WACO defense Friday night, guiding No. 1 North Tama past the Warriors, 39-0, in a Class A quarterfinal playoff game at the UNI-Dome.
North Tama (12-0) advances to play either Mason City Newman or Cedar Falls NU High in Friday’s semifinals at the UNI-Dome. The state championship is the following week. The Redhawks lost in overtime to Southern Cal, Lake City, in the championship game a year ago.
Boerm, a junior southpaw, threw three touchdown passes, two to senior Caleb Edwards, who also scored on a 66-yard pitch play from Boerm. The latter put the Redhawks ahead, 14-0, with 3:23 left in the first quarter.
“Me and my buddy Caleb were one-on-one on the corner and I just pitched the ball,” said Boerm, who inherited the quarterback position from standout Wyatt Hanus, who graduated. “I’m not trying to fill his shoes, I’m opening up a new box of shoes.”
Boerm completed 12-of-18 passes for 168 yards. He also rushed for 92 yards on 11 carries, running a belly series with option pitches out of a pistol formation.
“Brendon has really grown into the position,” North Tama first-year coach Brent Thoren said. “Everyday in practice we run drills where we work on carrying out our fakes. They were loaded up to stop the run and Brendon took advantage of it.”
North Tama overwhelmed WACO (8-4). The Redhawks pitched their 10th shutout and now have held every opponent to less than 100 yards rushing. WACO finished with 84 yards rushing and 45 of that came on the last two plays of the game.
“If we can get our defense points, I feel really good because then they’re chomping at the bit,” Thoren said.
So dominant was North Tama’s defense that on WACO’s first possession of the second half, Warriors Coach Chad Edeker chose to go for a first down on fourth-and-3 from WACO’s 47. The Warriors failed to make the first down, North Tama took over and drove 49 yards for another touchdown, Dylan Youel crashing in from the 3. The two-point PAT gave the Redhawks a 32-0 lead with 8:17 left in the third quarter.
The clock went continuous with 27 seconds left in the third quarter when Boerm hooked up with Edwards on a 23-yard touchdown pass that boosted North Tama’s lead to 39-0.
