CEDAR FALLS – Brendon Boermer plays shooting guard for the North Tama boys’ basketball team.  But it’s at football where his point guard skills excel.
Boerm pitched, passed, ran and faked his way through and around the WACO defense Friday night, guiding No. 1 North Tama past the Warriors, 39-0, in a Class A quarterfinal playoff game at the UNI-Dome.
North Tama (12-0) advances to play either Mason City Newman or Cedar Falls NU High in Friday’s semifinals at the UNI-Dome. The state championship is the following week. The Redhawks lost in …

CLINTON — Yes, there was a “beatdown” here Friday night.  But the Xavier Saints weren’t the “victims.”
Eighth-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier sparkled again defensively and humbled No. 3 Clinton, 28-6, in a Class 4A football quarterfinal Friday night at Coan Field.
Key word — humbled.

“We try to stay humble,” said Xavier Coach Duane Schulte, failing to hide a smirk. “And we tried … to avoid … a beatdown.”
A post on the Clinton football Web site this week congratulated the River Kings on their previous win. It also offered a prediction:
“Next beatdown victim: …

SOLON — James Morris certainly knows his way to the end zone and he showed that in his latest playoff performance.  Morris rushed for five first-half touchdowns leading No. 1 Solon to a 42-7 Class 2A state quarterfinal victory Friday night over host Iowa City Regina.
The Spartans eased Coach Kevin Miller’s uneasiness about playing four games in 14 days, winning a 39th straight game and racking up 347 rushing yards.
“I thought we came out and performed admirably well,” Miller said. “I thought we played physical,” Solon Coach Kevin Miller said. …

IOWA CITY — Lord, Dan Sabers was born a gamblin’ man. The Iowa City High football coach pulled out the old fake punt despite being on his own 28-yard line in the first half last night.
Roll them dice, baby.
“I love fake punts,” Sabers said after his Little Hawks held off Cedar Rapids Washington, 35-14, in a Class 4A playoff quarterfinal at Bates Field. “Come on, I’ve got A.J. Derby back there. I mean, is it all that risky when you’ve got a man like that back there?”
Good point. Quarterback/punter Derby …

IOWA CITY – Grace Murray and Beth Eyanson formed a friendship in swimming, but it’s expanded beyond a common interest in the sport.
The Iowa City standouts are better friends than competitors, but their competitiveness will be on display Saturday during the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Swim meet at the Horne Henry Center of the Marshalltown YMCA.
The state meet begins with the diving tonight at 5. Swim events are set for noon Saturday.
Eyanson and Murray have been two of the top performers in the area since they were …
