From the fans came a standing ovation for the Springville Orioles, as they left the court with heavy hearts, after a hard fought battle that did not go the Orioles way. It was the end of the 2009 volleyball road for the Orioles, as Don Bosco took the match in four games to advance to the State Tourney.

CEDAR RAPIDS — It’s green, Coach. Forest green.
No. 9 Linn-Mar endured five games and two hours — and survived two match points — to outlast No. 5 Iowa City High in a Class 4A regional-final volleyball match last night at Prairie High School.
Scores were 25-27, 25-13, 21-25, 25-15 and 18-16.
The Lions (26-14) earned their first trip to the state tournament. They’ll face No. 2 Iowa City West (37-2) in a quarterfinal at 2:15 p.m. next Wednesday.

SOLON — Let Ali Stark describe her team’s strategy going into its Class 2A regional volleyball final Tuesday night against West Branch.
“In practice, we’ve been preparing for this and going through pretty hard drills,” the Mount Vernon junior said. ”We wanted to keep up our intensity the entire time and not let them in (it). We just wanted to come in, play our game and dominate.”

The field is set for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s state swimming and diving meet this weekend at the Horne Henry Center at the Marshalltown YMCA.
The regional held at Cedar Rapids Washington is well represented in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Regional 100 fly champion Jill Broghammer of Washington leads a group of five to qualify, including Cedar Rapids Prairie-Williamsburg’s Shelby Doehrmann, Linn-Mar’s Sarah Wodnik, the Warriors’ Sami Puk and Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Lexi Scharmer.
