CEDAR RAPIDS – The last time Cedar Rapids Washington played Iowa City High, well, let’s allow Warriors coach Tony Lombardi to explain what happened.
“They beat the crap out of us.”
Moments after Washington defeated Cedar Rapids Kennedy 16-3 Monday night at chilly Kingston Stadium, Lombardi already was thinking about Friday night’s rematch at Bates Field, site of top-ranked City High’s 65-21 defeat of Washington on Sept. 4. When the teams battle again in a Class 4A State quarterfinal, things might not be the same.
“Our scheme is different, our defense is different,” Lombardi said. “We were still finding ourselves. But (City High) is a great team. They clearly are the class of the eastern side of the state.”
Going to the head of the class last night was Andre Dawson, who rushed for 222 yards on 44 carries to go over the 2,000 mark for the season. Although there were concerns about Dawson’s sore knee before the game, the senior running back put the Warriors (9-2) on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter with a 32-yard TD run on a fourth-and-five burst up the middle.
“They call me the horse and I galloped right to the end zone,” Dawson said. “The offensive line did a great job opening big holes tonight.”
Dawson was amazed to learn he had all those carries and said he was sore. “Some running backs don’t get that many carries in two games,” he said. “But I didn’t mind it. Like they say, the ball isn’t that heavy.”
Washington came out with some heavy-duty psyche when the Warriors warmed up in their traditional red jerseys and returned to the field wearing blue jerseys. Meanwhile, Kennedy (5-6) was feeling black and blue afterward, not only from attempting to stop Dawson all evening, but also from trying to move the ball against the swarming Warriors’ defense.
“Our defense played terrific,” Lombardi said.
Kennedy’s only attempt at cracking the scoreboard in the first half was snuffed when Adam Sailor blocked Eric Boyer’s 45-yard field goal attempt with 2:29 to play in the opening quarter. Boyer later made a 26-yarder to cap Kennedy’s first drive of the second half and cut the lead to 13 points – but the Cougars would get no closer.
Washington allowed eight first downs, 161 total yards and stopped Kennedy 8 of 9 times on third-down possessions.
Behind Dawson’s running, and aided by a personal foul penalty, Washington drove 61 yards on 12 plays to up its lead to 9-0 on Trent Buchanan’s 26-yard field goal with 2:41 left to halftime. After forcing a three-and-out Kennedy punt, Washington struck quickly on a Shay Gutman to Ronnie Henderson 63-yard TD pass for the 16-point halftime lead. Henderson caught a quick slant and outraced the secondary with 33.6 seconds on the clock.
The touchdown before half was really big. Dawson looks really good. I know they got beat soundly when they played ICH before, but I really see this as a great game. They had way too many tools against Kennedy tonight.
Tough season, tough loss for the Cougs. The win against Bettendorf gives their off-season a completely different feel to it.
Yea, Wash scored 16 points, including none in the second half, against a 5-6 team. They’re an offensive juggernaut.
City will smoke Wash
Kennedy’s defense apparently is for real. Even though it wasn’t enough to carry them to a win this time, the Cougars holding a good Washington team to 16 points proves something.
We came out and got punched in the mouth early, then we tried to play catch up in the second half but it was too late…like i’ve said b4…it’s hard to beat any team when your offense gets 3 & outted back to back so many times and doesnt score…GO COUGS!!!
A message to “NOT A FAN” The Warriors did a great job against the cougers. To many times kids doesn’t get their just deserve (justlike the Hawks) A win is a win no matter what the score is. I’ll always be a WARRIOR FAN. Keep up the good work, keep the pressure on, stay focus, stay strong, mentally and emotionally. Good Job Coaches.
Way to go DEFENSIVE #33 #13 #3 (Triple’3) Love to watch them play.
Kennedy Grad.
WOW!!!! There’s a lot of negative engery going on against the “WARRIORS” What’s up with that? the score reflects nothing but a good game that both teams played.Warriors played better and won. it is what it is.Warrior are the better team. Josh#6 had a great season. I must admire the fact how some of the boys hugged each other at the end of the game. That shows classmon both parts. So adults take some lesson from them and “MOVE ON”
Good Luck WARRIORS
Wash rolled it up big against North Scott last week and showed their true weaponry, so props to Kennedy for putting in a good defensive effort to limit the Warriors. On the same line of thought, hats off to the Wash defense for a unarguably dominant showing – they will need to carry that into their next game.
“They call me the horse and I galloped right to the end zone,” Dawson said. OMG, get over yourself. Coach Lombardi and whoever else have been feeding this kid’s ego these last few years should be ashamed of themselves. His quotes and interviews always make me want to gag.
MVC FAN, couldn’t be more wrong. His skills are getting doubted for some odd reason this year. But he is an incredible back. Size, speed, strength everyone knows about that. His vision and ability to set up his blocks is as good as Tavian Banks, Jason Scales, Terrence Freeny, etc. I’m saying he is one of the best running backs I’ve seen in this state.
For what it’s worth he is a down to earth nice kid too. Wash has always had tempers, egos, and mental meltdowns destroy teams. That hasn’t happened in Dawson’s 3 years of Warrior football.
The qb at ICH is probably the one you are referring too. Talk about feeding an ego. His junior year he single-handedly destroyed the chemistry of a state championship football and basketball team. Same kid this year, won’t win a championship in either sport.
CR Football Fan, in the unlikely event that Dawson ever needs an agent, you should definetely apply. In terms of the “odd reason” that his skills being doubted, search no further than the fact that he was horribly over rated to begin with.
The Hawkeyes’ greatest play this fall may prove to be their withdrawl of their scholarship offer to Dawson after signing two running backs that are already light years better than he’ll ever be. After Iowa withdrew their offer, Wisconsin quickly followed suit. If he doesn’t commit pretty soon, he may end up playing at Coe.
And your trashing of Wash is ridiculosuly exaggerated, as is your criticism of A.J. Derby.
“His junior year he single-handedly destroyed the chemistry of a state championship football…team”
No, CRX did that with good defense and special teams
OMG……….. reading all of these messages and response proves that there are to many parents/people living through thes kids dream. LOOK at this this, It’s just an honor that these kids has been offer to play at the next level.By the way forget Iowa, forget Wisc, let’s talk about Andr’e going to an all Black School. Something that Derby didn’t get an offer from. Those schools are to be given much credit. Dawson, isn’t the whole team, he has team mates and he is aware that is takes them to make him.

CR FOOTBALL FAN.. your comments about AJ Derby are way off base as he is a classy kid who has had great success at City High. As Guest pointed out it was a solid Xavier team with outstanding defense and special teams that beat the Little Hawks last season.
When I think of the all-time great high school RBs to go through this state I think of Tim Dwight and Tavain Banks. While Andre is a great RB, he is nowhere near the talent that were Dwight and Banks.
Your a hater and definitely is spelled like this…..Idiot.
While you’re correcting other people’s spelling, you might check out the difference between “you’re” as in “You’re a hater”, and “your”, as in “Your spelling is a bit imperfect as well”. The use of words like “suck” and “idiot” in a blog entry serve as a self portrait. Nice touch.
i cnt spll 4 nuttin butt ik tht ths es 2 muc mvc fan let kds b kds and g2 wrk b a man u rite at 9am on a thur bum hahah..
Ps. u r oone incompetant Hew man tht shouldn’t live through seeing other people not succeed in life, bashing a young man that will be the first on in his family to. go to college so get a job and enjoy the playoffs BUMMMMMMMMM. I know Andre’ and he will be the first out of his immediate family:)
Feigning ignorance in an attempt to both conceal and applaud ignorance. Congratulations, not everybody could pull that off.
