Solon beats Mid-Prairie, 42-13

SOLON — So what’s the most fun, James Morris? You get three choices.

Is it running for a touchdown, throwing a touchdown pass or putting a lick on an opposing player?

“I like making big hits,” Morris said with little hesitation, after helping his Solon Spartans to a 42-13 smackdown of Mid-Prairie in a Class 2A playoff first-rounder last night at Spartan Stadium. “That’s kind of what I go for. But those other things are great, too.”

Morris will play linebacker for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and it looks like he’s going to be a good one. But it’s a treat to watch him do those other two things as well.

Taking snaps at quarterback and running back, Morris ran for 115 yards and a touchdown and threw a 51-yard TD bomb to Dean Klosterman as Solon (11-0) won its 38th straight game. The Spartans have another go with rival Iowa City Regina (10-1) in a 2A quarterfinal Friday night at Regina.

Solon won in the regular season, 42-7.

It’ll be interesting to see how much QB Morris will play and how much Wes Sleeper will play. Sleeper had a 1-yard TD run of his own, as he continues his comeback from a midseason knee injury.

It’s kind of pick your poison when you’re playing the Spartans.

“I hate to say it this way, but we either get three, four, five yards a pop, or you can put a lot of people (in the box), and we can do what we want to do and get our athletes out in space,” said Solon Coach Kevin Miller. “I feel we’ve got enough weapons to make it very difficult for an opponent.”

Solon outgained Mid-Prairie by a 386-162 margin, holding standout Golden Hawks running back Tanner Miller to 60 yards on 10 carries. The Spartans rolled to a 42-0 lead, getting big-play TDs from Derrick Loveless (a 41-yard motion sweep), Andy Ashton (a 49-yard run) and, of course, Morris, who hit Klosterman with a long pass in the final minute of the second quarter.

“That wasn’t the prettiest pass, but it got the job done,” Morris said.
