MARION — Prep football fans at Thomas Park last night got their money’s worth.
But it was Decorah senior Robby Jewell who gave the Vikings fans a little more for their money.
Jewell picked off Marion quarterback Dalton Combs in the second overtime, securing Decorah’s 37-30 upset victory over No. 4 Marion in a Class 3A first-round playoff game at Thomas Park.
The teams battled back and forth for most of the game, spilling every ounce of effort they had.
“We said we were going to leave it all out on the field,” Jewell said. “We left it all out there and we the game.
“The was the toughest game we played all year. It’s the most fun I’ve had in a football game.”
Jewell stepped in front of a pass across the middle, denying Marion a chance to tie the game after Lucas Kane gave the Vikings a 37-30 lead on a 2-yard run in their half of the second overtime. Jewell read the quarterback’s eyes and made a play on the pass.
“I kind of stepped right in front of him and picked the ball like I’m supposed to,” Jewell said. “I thought I’m going to get that ball and I’m not going to let him have it.”
Marion took the first lead in overtime, needing just two Logan Pickering runs, including a 2-yard TD, to score.
It was Pickering’s third score of the night. He gave the Indians a 7-0 lead with a 1-yard run on their opening drive of the game. He added a 14-yard run in the third quarter to put Marion up 23-16.
Pickering finished with 156 yards rushing and 65 receiving yards.
“Logan’s played outstanding all year,” Marion Coach Tony Perkins said. “He’s a quality kid and a quality athlete and he has that type of game every week.”
Decorah, which seemed to really win the line battle, answered with Collin White’s 3-yard TD run that forced the second overtime.
Decorah trailed 23-20 when the Vikings marched 58 yards to set up Cody Sacquitne’s 38-yard field goal to tie it. Before that drive Marion had held them without a first down after halftime.
“We’ve been in several games over the course of the year that have been close in the fourth quarter,” Decorah Coach Bill Post said. “The guys just keep battling and keep fighting and they get it done. They believe in themselves.”
Decorah, despite being doubled up ion yardage by Marion in the first half, held a 20-16 halftime advantage thanks to some big plays.
The Vikings got on the board with Jewell’s halfback pass that hit Chris Wanless for a 37-yard touchdown to tie it at 7.
Then after Dalton Combs gave Marion a 14-7 lead, connecting with Corey Kramer on a deep pass on a 3-and-17 for a 47-yard pass. Combs led Marion with 216 yards passing.
Decorah answered immediately with Brock Arend’s 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
After a Marion field goal with White’s first TD — a 5-yard run in the second quarter. White ran for 45 yards and Wanless finished with 93 yards receiving to lead the Vikings (9-2).
The win was a little extra special for Jewell, whose father, Bob, who lost a first-round playoff game to Marion as a member of Decorah’s 1978 Decorah.
“I was so proud that I could help win this game for him,” Jewell said, “and help ease the pain for those guys.”
Post expected more a defensive game but said his team got the stop when it needed.
“Obviously, it’s a fantastic feeling to come out on top,” Decorah Coach bill Post said. “I don’t think anybody expected us to win. … Our guys did it. We just battled back and forth.”
Perkins said the team’s season isn’t tarnished with the loss. The Indians ended a strong campaign at 10-1.
“We didn’t get it done in the 11th game, but no one can take away 10-0,” Perkins said. “I’m proud of this season our kids had.”
I am just going to go home and have a good cry.
Anybody who’s ever been a part of Marion football should be proud of this team, this coach, and the season they had. Pure guts.
It was a classic battle between two fine teams. I hope the Vikings can continue to play this well. I’m pretty sure that Robby’s dad felt good about the game.
What a great game by both teams! Marion has a great football team and should be proud of a great season. Best of luck to Decorah on Friday – Go Vikes!
