WEST BRANCH — Third-ranked West Branch trailed at halftime, but didn’t panic.
The Bears just kept feeding top running back Cole Kelly and their defense took care of the rest.
Kelly ran for 301 yards and four touchdowns and West Branch picked off Eddyville-Blakesburg fives times — once for a score — in a 33-13 win last night in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs at the Little Rose Bowl.
West Branch (11-0) will face Clayton Ridge on Friday in the quarterfinals. Clayton Ridge (10-1) beat Starmont, 13-9, Monday night.

IOWA CITY — Iowa City High needed a jolt midway through the second quarter last night. As the Little Hawks have done all year, it called on quarterback A.J. Derby and wide receiver John Chelf to provide them with one.
With a seven-point lead and facing a second and 6 at the Dubuque Hempstead 41, the Little Hawks ran a play-action fake against the boxed-in Hempstead defense. Derby then hit Chelf up the right sideline, past Hempstead cornerback Alex Brown for a 41-yard touchdown pass and a two-touchdown lead. The top-ranked …

MARION — Prep football fans at Thomas Park last night got their money’s worth.
But it was Decorah senior Robby Jewell who gave the Vikings fans a little more for their money.
Jewell picked off Marion quarterback Dalton Combs in the second overtime, securing Decorah’s 37-30 upset victory over No. 4 Marion in a Class 3A first-round playoff game at Thomas Park.

The teams battled back and forth for most of the game, spilling every ounce of effort they had.
“We said we were going to leave it all out on the field,” Jewell …

SOLON — So what’s the most fun, James Morris? You get three choices.
Is it running for a touchdown, throwing a touchdown pass or putting a lick on an opposing player?
“I like making big hits,” Morris said with little hesitation, after helping his Solon Spartans to a 42-13 smackdown of Mid-Prairie in a Class 2A playoff first-rounder last night at Spartan Stadium. “That’s kind of what I go for. But those other things are great, too.”

Morris will play linebacker for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and it looks like he’s going to …

CEDAR RAPIDS – The last time Cedar Rapids Washington played Iowa City High, well, let’s allow Warriors coach Tony Lombardi to explain what happened.
“They beat the crap out of us.”
Moments after Washington defeated Cedar Rapids Kennedy 16-3 Monday night at chilly Kingston Stadium, Lombardi already was thinking about Friday night’s rematch at Bates Field, site of top-ranked City High’s 65-21 defeat of Washington on Sept. 4. When the teams battle again in a Class 4A State quarterfinal, things might not be the same.

“Our scheme is different, our defense is different,” …

The Green Devils took advantage of seven Cascade turnovers, including two fumbled kickoffs that were returned for touchdowns.
Osage built a 31-7 halftime advantage and coasted to the quarterfinals with a 11-0 record.
“All season long we’ve been creating turnovers and trying to avoid mistakes,” Osage Coach Lon Lawler.
“We like to let the other guy make them.”

MARION — If this was the swan song for Armstrong Field, the Xavier Saints made sure it would end on a sour note.
From their perspective, sour was sweet.
No. 8 Xavier dominated from start to finish and punished No. 7 Linn-Mar, 41-3, in a Class 4A first-round football playoff in front of nearly 6,000 last night.
“We were definitely pumped up,” said linebacker Nick Garland, who spearheaded a defensive unit that held Lions running back Jer Garman to 32 rushing yards. “We didn’t want to disappoint our crowd. We wanted to keep …
