IOWA CITY — Sloppy conditions caused everything to go wrong for Iowa City West against No. 7 Linn-Mar. The worst news: it didn’t even slow down shifty running back Jer Garman.
Garman ran for four touchdowns as the Lions looked impressive as they head into the postseason in a 41-10 win over West High last night at Trojan Field. Linn-Mar won the MVC Valley Division title and will host a substate game Wednesday.
“It’s awesome,” said Garman. “This is where all the hard work in the summer pays off.
“We tried to finish …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Shay Gutman was oh-so close to perfection last night at Kingston Stadium.
Gutman, Cedar Rapids Washington’s senior quarterback, completed 5 of 6 passes for four touchdowns in less than a quarter and the Warriors steamrolled Waterloo East, 59-6, in a Mississippi Valley Conference prep football regular-season finale.
Washington (7-2) qualified for a Class 4A substate game Wednesday. The Warriors will host the game at 7 p.m. in Kingston Stadium.
Gutman tossed three touchdown passes to senior wide receiver Ronnie Henderson as Washington bolted to a 19-0 lead less than six …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Forget the cold. The Xavier Saints enter the postseason with a full head of steam.
They’re the prototypical “team nobody wants to play.”
Pat Chizek scored four touchdowns, the defense surrendered only 43 yards, and No. 9 Cedar Rapids Xavier buried Cedar Rapids Prairie, 35-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference football game last night at frigid, muddy John Wall Field.
“I’ll be honest, I don’t know how good we really are,” said Xavier Coach Duane Schulte. “I do know that these guys have risen to the occasion the last six …

VAN HORNE — What letdown?
The Marion Indians completed a perfect regular season with a perfect first half that helped them to a 46-0 blowout of Benton Community on a cold and windy night in rural Benton County.
Marion looked more than ready for the start of the Class 3A postseason, destroying a Benton team that had hopes of its own to qualify for Wednesday’s substate. Instead the Bobcats finished 4-5 and watched Vinton-Shellsburg/DeWitt Central nab the last of four postseason spots in District 4.
Marion wrapped up the district championship last week …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City High made their regular season finale appear uglier than the cold, rainy weather that accompanied it.
The game was brutal enough to chase away most of the fans who witnessed the assault by the second-half kickoff and continuous clock.
The top-ranked Little Hawks handled the elements and pummeled Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 54-6, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kingston Stadium.
City High ended the regular season 9-0. It’s the at least the second straight year the Little Hawks have finished the regular season unbeaten.
“That speaks volumes,” City …
