CEDAR RAPIDS — Scott Mittman was a muddy mess. A muddy champion. At last.
Mittman struck gold for the first time in his high school cross country career, claiming the boys’ title at a Class 4A district meet Thursday at Noelridge Park.
“It’s pretty special,” said Mittman, a senior at Iowa City High. “At times, we didn’t know if we’d be running at all today. To get out there and compete for a victory, it’s pretty special.”
Twenty state-qualifying meets were scheduled Thursday. Sixteen were postponed until Monday because of rain. Meet manager …

When North Cedar fell to 0-3 in its district, postseason prospects looked bleak at best.
They looked worse at Highland when it dropped to 0-6 overall.  Now opportunity awaits both teams. All they have to do is snatch it.
Late-season surges have lifted North Cedar (4-4 overall, 3-3 Class 2A District 5) and Highland (2-6, 2-3 A-5) to the brink of postseason football.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City High made their regular season finale appear uglier than the cold, rainy weather that accompanied it.
The game was brutal enough to chase away most of the fans who witnessed the assault by the second-half kickoff and continuous clock.
The top-ranked Little Hawks handled the elements and pummeled Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 54-6, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kingston Stadium.
City High ended the regular season 9-0. It’s the at least the second straight year the Little Hawks have finished the regular season unbeaten.

Sixteen of 20 district/regional cross country meets throughout the state were postponed until Monday.
Those to bite the dust:
Class 4A: at Marshalltown, Indianola and Council Bluffs
Class 3A: at Perry, Spencer, Knoxville and Anamosa
Class 2A: at Columbus Junction, Greenfield, Sheldon and Monticello
Class 1A: All five of them
