Mount Vernon’s path to the U.S. Cellular Center can be summed up in four words.
Take care of business.
The top-rated Mustangs open Class 2A regional volleyball play Tuesday against Belle Plaine. They’re heavily favored Tuesday, and they’re heavily favored to reach the state tournament for the third straight year.
“Like I tell my kids, I try to find out what I can on the opponents, the tendencies on what they’re going to do,” said Coach Shirley Ryan. “We’ve got to take care of business on the way we play.”
Mount Vernon (35-1) won the …

He may not be from Ork, but Tanner Mork’s performance Friday night was certainly otherworldly.
The North Fayette running back “Nanu Nanu-ed” his way to a Week 8-best 332 yards rushing and three touchdowns in his team’s big 40-19 win at fifth-ranked Cascade (7-1). The victory wrapped up the District 4 championship for Class 2A’s second-ranked team.
“It didn’t seem like I had that many,” Mork said. “If you would have asked me, I would have said I had about 180, maybe 200 yards. It was weird.”
Mork broke loose for a 75-yard …

CEDAR RAPIDS — No. 2 is No. 1 again in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
Second-ranked Iowa City West dusted No. 4 Dubuque Hempstead in two games, 25-18 and 25-19, to repeat as MVC volleyball tournament champion Saturday at the Cedar Rapids Jefferson gym.
The tournament featured seven teams in the Class 4A top 10 and another — Dubuque Wahlert — No. 6 in 3A. All eight ranked teams survived pool play and reached the championship bracket quarterfinals.
Despite the illustrious field, West Coach Kathy Bresnahan said her team did not feel pressure to …

DUBUQUE — Bailey Pons considers the Mississippi Valley Conference girls swimming meet just one small stepping stone on the path to much higher season-ending goals.
So when Cedar Falls won the team title by 122 points Saturday at the Hempstead pool, it took her somewhat by surprise.
“We came here expecting to swim our best and to maybe compete for the team championship,” said Pons, who had a hand in four victories.
“Our focus is always on swimming our best at the end of the year — in regionals and at state. So …
