CEDAR RAPIDS — Take that, brother. Well, that’s not exactly the way Joe Sayre put it Friday night. At least not publicly.
The Cedar Rapids Xavier quarterback threw two touchdown passes to help his team past Iowa City West, 35-10, last night at Saints Field. He has 10 this season, tying Dan Schmall for the school’s season record, and surpassing his older brother, Mike, by one.
“That’s news to me,” Joe Sayre said. “No, it doesn’t really mean anything to me. It’s a team game.”
That what Saints Coach Duane Schulte stressed after …

IOWA CITY – Coach Dan Sabers says undefeated and top-ranked Iowa City High can still improve, but he can’t squawk about the results. His team has the right attitude for October, too.
Seniors A.J. Derby and Ellis Jordan were laughing and yelling with the rest of their huddled teammates after another impressive win Friday night in City High’s final home game. Before the first quarter ended, Derby and Jordan had each scored twice to help the Little Hawks cruise to a 47-14 victory over Waterloo West at Frank Bates Field.

CEDAR RAPIDS — If you wanted defensive, smash-mouth football, cold Kingston Stadium was the place to be Friday night. And if you wanted an exciting, last-second, come-from-behind victory, well, Kingston Stadium was warm to the task.
Dubuque Hempstead quarterback Matt Ehlers’ 5-yard run with 32.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter led the Mustangs (6-2) to a 17-13 victory over Cedar Rapids Kennedy (3-5).
“It’s like a dream. I’m going to have to look at the film to see what really happened there at the end,” said Hempstead Coach Mark Ehlers. “Matt …

Linn-Mar (7-1) clinched a tie for the MVC Valley Division title. The Lions can win the championship outright with a win at Iowa City West …

Football, IC Regina, Prep Sports, Solon »
IOWA CITY — Solon made a big statement last night.
The distance between the top-ranked and third-ranked teams in Class 3A is a lot further than the drive it takes to reach each other. Top-ranked Solon handled No. 3 Iowa City Regina, 42-7, in a Class 2A District 5 battle last night at Regina High School. Solon seemed to have a little more adrenaline pumping and wanted to put its stamp on a game that determined the district champion and increased the Spartans win streak to 35 games.

MARION — Wright on the money.
Mahtias Wright nailed a 32-yard field goal as time expired as fifth-ranked Marion rallied past No. 7 Maquoketa, 14-13, in a wild Class 3A District 4 football game last night at Thomas Park Field.
“I knew that if we snapped it and got it down, I’d put it through,” said Wright, who moved to Marion from Colorado last spring.
Marion (8-0 overall, 6-0 district) clinched the 3A-4 title regardless of the outcome of its regular-season finale next week at Benton Community.
The Indians did so despite four turnovers …
Cedar Rapids Xavier, Football, IC West »
Xavier took the second-half kickoff and extended its lead with a 65-yard drive. It was finished with a 14-yard TD pass from QB Joe Sayre to WR Ryan Sander on a hitch pattern. Sander broke two tackles en route to the end zone.
It was Sayre’s 10th TD pass of the season, tying the Xavier school record.
A big 39-yard TD pass from Sayre to Colin O’Connor then set up Dylan Martin’s 1-yard TD plunge to make it a 28-10 game with 3:08 left in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, …
