Wahlert lays goose-egg against IC West
IOWA CITY — Iowa City West inched closer to its first postseason berth since 2003 with a 35-0 home win over Dubuque Wahlert Friday night.
The Trojans (3-4) scored in every period and held Wahlert to just 20 rushing yards. It was a big win for the program, West Coach Brian Sauser said, for both the present and the future.
“We knew for us, the third win tonight, it’s pretty likely we’ll get at the minimum into the substate based on how things are shaking out,” Sauser said. “That would be huge for the program. There’s no doubt about that.”
West took a first-quarter lead when quarterback Charles Rogers connected with wide receiver Tayler Bontrager on a 77-yard pass down the left sideline with 2 minutes, 26 seconds left.
Two offensive possessions later, Rogers took a low snap, dodged a handful of Wahlert defenders and sprinted in for an 11-yard touchdown to pace West to a 14-0 lead.
“We didn’t play a perfect game, but we won 35-0,” Sauser said. “Charlie Rogers and Tayler made a couple of big plays early in the game, and Charlie got things going with his feet again which really helped us out. We kind of felt if we got up early, we’d be OK.”
Wahlert (1-6) killed its chances in the first half with three center snaps that veered past quarterback Zack Brautigam totaling minus-56 yards. With 59 seconds left in the half, Wahlert had the ball at the West 11. But the third high snap sent the ball 22 yards behind Brautigam, and West linebacker Devonnie Moses recovered to end Wahlert’s threat.
Rogers, Berkley Strand and Richard Bryant all scored on rushing touchdowns in the second half. Rogers rushed for 78 yards and completed five passes for 111 yards.
West still has a chance at its first winning record since 2005. West plays at Cedar Rapids Xavier next Friday before closing with a home game against Linn-Mar.
