CEDAR RAPIDS — Andre Dawson ran with a special purpose against Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
In honor of his mother, Hilda, diagnosed with breast cancer when he was just 12 years old, the Cedar Rapids Washington senior running back made a pledge to score for every year his mother had survived.
“I told myself my goal was to get a touchdown for every year she survived,” said an emotional Dawson, now 17. “This year was her fifth year.”

SOLON 61, CAMANCHE 8 – James Morris, moved to quarterback after Wes Sleeper tore his ACL in practice Wednesday, passed for 101 yards and ran for 93 as top-ranked Solon downed Camanche, 61-8, Friday night in a Class 2A District 4 prep football game at Solon. IOWA CITY — This was more like an open-book quiz compared to the big test that waits No. 3 Iowa City Regina next week.
The Regals scored four touchdowns in the first five minutes, including two fumble returns, in an easy 49-13 win last night over West Liberty at Regina Stadium, one week before rival and top-ranked Solon visits here.

IOWA CITY — Iowa City West inched closer to its first postseason berth since 2003 with a 35-0 home win over Dubuque Wahlert Friday night.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Senior quarterback A.J. Derby and his Iowa City High teammates struggled through a flu-ravaged week of practice. You couldn’t tell by the top-ranked Little Hawks’ performance last night.
Derby ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead City High past Cedar Rapids Prairie, 34-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference prep football game at John Wall Field.
