The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced Tuesday that the pitching distance for high school and junior high softball will be moved back from 40 to 43 feet for the 2010 season.
Jeff Linder reported in July, during the state softball tournament, that the new distance would be adopted by the summer of 2011. http://iowaprepsports.com/2009/07/25/softball-pitchers-moving-back-3-feet/

IOWA CITY — Mother nature showed her nasty side Tuesday.
Chilly temperatures, a little rain and a persistent wind that gusted to nearly 40 miles an hour tested prep golfers.
Top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy passed the test to claim its second straight Class 4A district crown at Finkbine Golf Course and earn a berth to this weekend’s state tournament.
Kennedy scored 319, 10 points more than runner-up Linn-Mar.
Conditions worsened as the day progressed.

CLASS 4A EAST
Five teams have clinched: Iowa City High (6-0), Clinton (6-0), Linn-Mar (6-0), Bettendorf (5-1) and Dubuque Hempstead (5-1).
Six teams are 4-2 and wrap up a berth with a win this week: Davenport Assumption, Cedar Rapids Washington, Pleasant Valley, Cedar Falls, Davenport Central and Cedar Rapids Xavier. These teams are in decent shape even if they don’t win another game.
North Scott and Cedar Rapids Prairie are 3-3, and probably will qualify with one more win.

This year’s Rivalry Saturday for girls’ basketball will be Jan. 2, 2010, at the U.S. Cellular Center.
The field will feature five teams that advanced to the state tournament last year, including 2A runner-up Cascade and 4A semifinalist Linn-Mar.

Cedar Rapids Washington quarterback Shay Gutman is questionable for Friday’s game against Cedar Rapids Jefferson after suffering a sprained left knee last week.
“He practiced in full gear, with a brace on his knee (Monday),” said Washington Coach Tony Lombardi. “He’s pretty sore behind his knee. It comes down to whether he’s capable of doing what he usually does. If he’s capable of playing, he’s going to play.
“I guess I would put it this way: He’s questionable for Friday, probable long-term.”
