CEDAR RAPIDS — Joey Gase has the drive of a champion. The determined 16-year-old race car driver proved just that at Hawkeye Downs Speedway this summer.
In just his second year in the class, Gase became the youngest late model season points champion in track history, placing fifth in the season finale last Friday and claiming the crown by 24 points.
Gase, a third generation racer at Hawkeye Downs, entered the season with high expectations and surpassed them.

D.J. Norman has decided to become a Thunderbird.
Norman, a senior guard at Linn-Mar High School, has committed to play women’s basketball at Southern Utah University.
Linn-Mar Coach Mike Brandt confirmed the commitment Wednesday morning.
Norman averaged 8 points and 3 assists per game last year as Linn-Mar finished 24-1 and reached the Class 4A state semifinals. She was a 75-percent free throw shooter.
SUU is located in Cedar City, Utah, and is a member of the Summit League. The Thunderbirds were 9-20 last season.
