CEDAR RAPIDS — No letup. No letdown.
And no mercy.
Cedar Rapids Washington capitalized on five take-aways, including a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ronnie Henderson, and routed Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 44-6, in a Mississippi Valley Conference football game last night at Kingston Stadium.
Andre Dawson rushed for 235 yards on 26 carries as the Warriors (3-2) put last week’s loss to Linn-Mar in their rearview mirror. In that loss, Washington blew a 14-point halftime lead. No such letdown — or letup — against the Cougars (2-3).
“We coached a lot of …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Andy Duggan should have fond memories of September 2009.
He added a newborn daughter to his family and a week later he has an addition to his trophy case.
Duggan placed second in the Sportsman feature, capturing the division’s season points trophy at Championship Points Night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway, snapping Dave McCalla’s three-year win streak in the class.
It was Duggan’s first track championship after placing second twice.
“After 10 years of racing it feels pretty good,” said Duggan, who entered with a two-point lead and won by a single …

MOUNT VERNON — Warning to upcoming foes of the Marion football team: Do not make the Indians your homecoming foe.
Logan Pickering scored four touchdowns and Marion scored 35 unanswered points en route to a 42-3 whipping of Mount Vernon last night in a Class 3A District 4 prep football game at the Mustangs field that spoiled the Mustangs’ Homecoming.
“If somebody wants to say that we’re their homecoming game, then we’ll make it the toughest Homecoming game they’ve had,” Marion Coach Tony Perkins said. “DeWitt did that to us earlier in …

IOWA CITY — Lucas Foelsch barely could hide his enthusiasm.
The Iowa City West senior tight end whooped and hollered with his teammates moments after West overpowered Cedar Rapids Prairie 20-7 at Trojan Field last night. It was West’s first home victory since 2006, when Foelsch was a freshman. West’s large student body mobbed the players after the game, and the Trojans were all smiles.
“It’s fantastic, I’m absolutely thrilled,” Foelsch said. “We’ve been waiting so long for a home win, especially on homecoming my senior year. It’s fantastic.”
West (2-3) dominated Prairie …

CEDAR RAPIDS — When it’s all said and done, don’t be terribly surprised if this is the last Metro football team standing.
There are some other good clubs out there, and it’s true it took a 31-13 homecoming win over Waterloo West last night at Saints Field to bump Cedar Rapids Xavier’s record over the break-even mark. But as the cliche goes, this might just be the best 3-2 team in the state.
Remember the Saints two losses were down-to-the-final-gun heartbreakers to unbeaten Linn-Mar and Iowa City High. Xavier’s good, as it …
