C.R. KENNEDY at C.R. WASHINGTON
Time & place: 7:15 p.m., at Kingston Stadium (Washington is the home team, and its fans will sit on the west side).
Radio: KGYM-AM (1600)
Records: Both teams are 2-2
Notable: Before last year’s playoff expansion, this would be a game for postseason survival. Washington racked up 495 yards of total offense last week, but couldn’t hold a 14-point halftime lead and succumbed to Linn-Mar, 41-38. Kennedy begins life without RB Royce Bell, who tore his ACL and meniscus last week.

DUBUQUE — Iowa City High went to Dubuque paired with host Hempstead as the last remaining undefeated teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Mississippi Division.
It was the Little Hawks’ mission last night to make clear they remain the dominant team in the league.
Mission accomplished.
Running the ball almost at will, City High plowed Hempstead, 28-7, on a beautiful night at Dalzell Field. Both teams came into the game ranked in the top 10 in Class 4A — City High No. 2 and Hempstead No. 8 — but the Little Hawks were …

This year really counts for Matt McDonough.
The University of Iowa red-shirt freshman is ready to contribute to the Hawkeye wrestling success as official preseason practices start today.
McDonough is trading his red-shirt for that traditional black-and-gold singlet. He used his first year to get acclimated to the college level.
“Now I get a chance to go out and prove it to everyone and I don’t have to wrestle in opens,” McDonough said. “Things are for real now and you’re really going for a national title. You’re not just training only to get …

Christina and Alexandra Scharmer bring a new twist sibling rivalries.
The sisters are on rival swim teams. The younger Alexandra is a sophomore on Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s squad and Christina is a senior for Cedar Rapids Washington. Christina, who attended Franklin Junior High, chose to open-enroll transfer to Washington after her sophomore year.
The two teams battled Tuesday at Kennedy with the Cougars coming out on top 110-76. The Scharmers exchanged some good-nature debate about which team was better before the meet, but left each other out.
“We’re usually not competing directly against …

Waukon High School sent us an advance copy of its 2009-10 girls’ basketball schedule.
So, when will Gene Klinge supplant the late Bob Mullen as Iowa’s all-time winningest coach? Mullen finished with 938 wins. Klinge has 931. So it’s seven to catch, eight to pass.
Barring snowouts (certainly a factor in northeast Iowa) and upsets, it should happen before Christmas. After all, Waukon was a Class 3A state semifinalist last year and certainly should be ranked in the top five (maybe No. 1) in the preseason rankings. If the Indians don’t stumble, the big …
