IOWA CITY — Maybe it was just the homecoming jitters for Iowa City Regina.
The Class 2A fourth-ranked Regals’ usually fluid offense looked sloppy with stalled drives and big penalties in a 16-6 win over North Cedar last night at Regina Stadium.
Luckily for Coach Marv Cook, Regina’s defense — which has now allowed just four points per game — held the Knights to 174 yards of offense and kept them out off its side of the field for all but one play in the first half.
Regina (4-0, 2-0 2A-5) managed 10 …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Xavier owns 42nd Street, and they took possession in convincing fashion.
The Saints, powered by a strong second half, dropped rival Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 43-19, in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest last night at Kingston Stadium.
“We just wanted to come out here and show what we got,” Xavier running back Pat Chizek said, “and as you can tell by the scoreboard we played a good game.”
A good game punctuated by an impressive second half. The Saints (2-2) scored four touchdowns, including three in the third quarter, …

MARION — The feel-good story of Class 4A football just got better.
Jer Garman rushed for three second-half touchdowns and Linn-Mar converted a gutsy fourth-and-1 call late in the game to ice a 41-38 comeback win over No. 7 Cedar Rapids Washington in a Mississippi Valley Conference thriller Friday night at Armstrong Field.
And after quarterback Will Roth took a knee to melt the final seconds, the home fans began a chant few would have fathomed at the beginning of the year:
“Four-and-oh! Four-and-oh!”
That’s right. the Lions are 4-0, because they finally were …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Sometimes, beating your opponent comes down to just not beating yourself.
Cedar Rapids Prairie overcame three first-half turnovers with a dominant second-half defensive effort and throttled winless Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 30-14, last night in a Mississippi Valley Conference football game at John Wall Field.
Prairie (3-1) had one turnover inside the Jefferson 10-yard line and another that led to a J-Hawks (0-4) touchdown. The game was tied 14-14 at the half.
“I told them we needed to quit beating ourselves,” Prairie Coach Craig Jelinek said of his halftime speech. “That …

MARION — The “Pink Out” turned into a blowout.
Marion scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and went on to throttle Vinton-Shellsburg, 42-8, last night in the first football game of the season at Thomas Park. The Indians’ home opener three weeks ago was moved to Coe College because of flooding.
This was a special game in many ways for Marion (4-0). Players wore pink socks and commemorative pink game T-shirts were sold to fans to benefit breast cancer awareness, prevention and treatment. Marion Coach Tony Perkins said he figures at …
