Iowa City High blistered crosstown rival Iowa City West last night with the ferocity of a boot between the eyes.
The Little Hawks, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, scored on their first seven drives and retained possession of the schools’ traveling trophy with a 49-10 win in the annual “Battle for the Boot” at Bates Field.
Iowa City High (4-0) rushed for 226 yards and passed for 198 more while overpowering the Trojans (1-3) on both sides of the ball. It was a complete victory for the Little Hawks, one Coach …

The Linn-Mar boys’ golf team looks good on paper, but these Lions are no paper tigers.
Linn-Mar has produced some strong performances early, but shows an even greater potential for a run in the last part of the season.
Linn-Mar Coach Steve Kahler said his team has battled inconsistency at times, but shows a capability for big accomplishments if their games become more complete.
“I think we’re barely touching the surface,” said Kahler, comparing his team to the 2007 Lions who placed third at state. “From a coaching standing point, I can see …

It’s not a typo to see Sami Puk’s name on just about every front page of the first installment of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s swim power rankings.
The Cedar Rapids Washington senior has been a very versatile option for head coach Megan Smith.
Puk holds top-14 rankings in all but two of 11 swim events. Most of those are top, owning the fifth-fastest reported time in the 100 free (55.35 seconds).
“She’s an incredibly gifted athlete,” Smith said. “Swam well the last couple of years … She put in a …

TAMA — Todd Dale has visions of football glory at the Meskwaki Settlement School. Victories. Championships.
Those are long-range visions. Right now?
“Right now, our goals are to get off the ground and get going,” said Dale, the football coach and athletics director.  Right now, the reality is long bus rides and lopsided defeats.
But the players are tickled to be playing for their own school, rather than competing at nearby South Tama, which they had done in the past.
“It just wasn’t for me over there,” said Dalton Youngbear, a junior who played …

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A former Kentucky high school football coach has been acquitted in the death of a player who collapsed at a practice where the team was put through a series of sprints on a hot summer day.
It was a rare criminal prosecution of a coach in a player’s heat-related death.
Former coach David Jason Stinson was charged after 15-year-old Max Gilpin collapsed at an August 2008 practice as the team ran a series of sprints known as “gassers.” He died three days later at a Louisville hospital of …
