Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Washington, Football, Prep Sports »
Three games into the season and teams are still trying to find their identity.
The Warriors cleared some things up for their coach with a strong run game, getting two touchdowns apiece from running back Andre Dawson and quarterback Shay Gutman, and stout defense to handle Cedar Rapids Prairie, 28-7, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle Thursday night at Kingston Stadium.
“I felt they made a nice statement,” Washington Coach Tony Lombardi said. “It’s a pretty good showing and this is a pretty good football team.”
The Warriors (2-1) used every down, scoring …

Linn-Mar is 3-0 with its latest victory, which also showed what kind of gaudy numbers the Lions’ offense is capable of producing.
Linn-Mar rolled up an amazing 626 yards of offense in a 62-6 shellacking of Dubuque Senior last night at Dalzell Field. Jer Garman had 100 yards rushing by his third carry and finished the night with 226 yards, all in the first half. Garman rushed for three touchdowns.
Quarterback Will Roth, whose night’s work also ended at halftime, threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns. His 13-yard laser beam to …

His team had just won the girls’ championship in decisive fashion, but Tom Mittman didn’t have time to talk.
“Sorry, but I need to pay attention to this next race,” he said.
It certainly wasn’t a rude gesture. These days, Mittman has two sources of immense pride — his team, and his son.
For the second consecutive year, Iowa City High swept the team titles at the 20-team Cedar Rapids Invitational cross country meet Thursday at Noelridge Park.
Neither race was close. The girls scored 40 points and defeated runner-up Iowa City West by …

Blaze Smith didn’t exactly learn about his record performance in record time.
He heard about it four days after the fact. From a reporter.
Smith, the quarterback at Clear Creek Amana, established an all-time Iowa best with 43 completions in the Clippers’ 40-28 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg last Friday.
“Really?” Smith said. “That’s kind of cool. I try to stay away from the stats and keep a level head.”
Even for a level head, these are mind-bending numbers: 43 completions in 54 attempts for 430 yards and three touchdowns, plus 121 yards rushing and three …

Mark Becker
It’s now up to a district court judge to determine whether Mark Becker is competent to stand trial for the murder of former Aplington-Parkersburg head football coach Ed Thomas. A hearing was held this morning in Mason City, with two experts making vastly different statements about Becker’s mental state.
Fort Dodge psychologist Dan Rogers performed a mental evaluation of Becker at the request of Becker’s lawyer. Rogers met with Becker twice and according to Rogers Becker showed the classic symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia.
“He has the delusions. He has …
