IOWA CITY — A.J. Derby put on a show Friday night, and so did top-ranked Iowa City High. Derby, one of the state’s most highly sought recruits, threw for three touchdowns and ran for two as the Little Hawks coasted past No. 3 Cedar Rapids Washington, 65-21, at Bates Field.
Derby completed 8 of 10 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 111 yards on 16 carries.
Derby, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound quarterback/linebacker, set the game’s tone with a massive hit on Washington’s first offensive play from scrimmage. Derby …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Kennedy let one lead slip through its fingers, and the Cougars were determined to avoid a repeat.
So when they took a lead this time they grasped it with a vise-tight grip. Less than a week removed from losing its opener in the final minutes, Kennedy kept churning out the points and thumped Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 56-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game Friday night at Kingston Stadium.
The Cougars squandered a double-digit lead last week to Linn-Mar and used that as motivation. Once they had a …
Cedar Rapids Prairie, Dubuque Senior, Football »
CEDAR RAPIDS — Austin Reutzel had a perfect football game last night for Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Reutzel kicked three field goals, including a 43-yarder, and ran back a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown as Prairie rolled past Dubuque Senior, 45-7, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at John Wall Field.
Prairie (2-0) raced to a 32-0 lead by halftime and coasted. Senior Adam Nelson scored two touchdowns and senior Jordan Aune intercepted his third pass of the season.
Prairie’s defense limited Senior (0-2) to 122 total yards. The Rams didn’t cross into …
Center Point-Amana, Football, Williamsburg »
CENTER POINT — Williamsburg’s defense took much more than it gave.
The Raiders forced three turnovers, scored a safety and didn’t permit Center Point-Urbana within a sniff of the end zone in a 19-0 non-district football victory last night at Rogers Field.
“Our defense was unbelievable,” said lineman Austin Blythe, a University of Iowa recruit. “We bent a little, but we didn’t break.”
Viedo from KCRG-TV9
They barely bent. The Raiders (1-1) didn’t allow CPU (1-1) inside the 35-yard line. Unlike last week, when the Raiders gave up a 19-point lead to Mid-Prairie, they …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Kyle Hollister was asked who his team plays next week.
“Umm, Dubuque,” the Linn-Mar junior defensive back replied after a pause.
He was asked which Dubuque school. Was it Senior?
“Yeah, I think so,” he said.
Got to love the tunnel vision. Focus only on the opponent directly in front of you.
It’s a philosophy that has served Linn-Mar well so far. The Lions picked up their second surprising victory of the young prep football season Friday night, holding on for a 14-7 win over Cedar Rapids Xavier before a packed house of over 5,000 …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Pardon Haley Brightwell’s distraction.
“All day, the only thing I could think about was volleyball,” said Brightwell, an all-state middle blocker for Class 4A second-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy. “I just wanted it to start.”
So far, pretty darn good.
Kennedy and No. 3 Iowa City West lived up to their preseason fanfare, cleaning house at the MVC-MAC Showdown last night at Kennedy High School. The Cougars (3-0) and the Women of Troy (4-0) romped through their three …
