CEDAR RAPIDS – Both teams scored touchdowns on their opening possessions of 2009.
Washington took the opening kickoff and drove 78 yards on 12 plays, scoring on Dawson’s 17-yard burst up the middle. The Division I recruit was a decoy for a lot of the drive, as Gutman either ran the ball off the veer or threw it the first five plays.
In fact, it was a 23-yard strike to wide receiver Evan Davis that took the ball deep into Cedar Falls territory. On 3rd-and-13 at the Tigers 30, Gutman hit Davis …

It didn’t take the Little Hawks long to get going.  Second play from scrimmage and Derby goes up top to John Chelf, he takes it 65 yards to the house.
The Wahlert defense huddled up to make some adjustments, but if you take away the pass, City High has a potent run game too.  Ellis Jordan busting some moves – couple jukes, couple spins – and taking it 40 yards inside the Wahlert 20.

IOWA CITY — Dubuque Hempstead doesn’t have one replacement for all-state running back Josh Lenz, now a freshman with Iowa State University. The Mustangs have a few.
Hempstead racked up 177 yards on the ground behind speedy junior Jason Lewis’ two long touchdown runs and the Mustangs won, 38-21, after a 24-point second quarter against Iowa City West in a Mississippi Valley Conference game last night at Trojan Field.
West often stacked eight defenders in the box, but Lewis and the other backs found holes or ran by tacklers. Lewis finished with …

SOLON — In the wisdom of Wes Sleeper, punting is a sign of failure.
“You never want to punt,” he said. “When you punt, it means you got stopped for three downs.”
Solon stopped itself on occasion last night. But Mount Vernon couldn’t do it.  The Spartans more than overcame four turnovers, racking up 432 yards of total offense in a 49-10 pasting of the Mustangs in a non-district football game at Spartan Stadium.  Two-time defending Class 2A state champions, the Spartans (1-0) won for the 28th straight time and pushed their …

PARKERSBURG — A red wave of Aplington-Parkersburg fans applauded in unison last night as their Falcons jogged off the field at halftime.
Nestled among the nearly 4,000 fans who packed Ed Thomas Field were about a dozen sporting similar red T-shirts that read “Becker.”
On a night when the community paid one last round of respects to legendary coach Ed Thomas, the irony lies with Aplington-Parkersburg senior Scott Becker. His brother, 24-year-old Mark Becker, is accused of fatally shooting Thomas in front of 20 students June 24 at the school’s weight facility. …

Kingston Stadium has long been the mother of prep football stadiums in the area. She got a makeover this spring and summer and looks pretty darn hot.
The home of all three Cedar Rapids Metro schools opened the 2009 season in impressive fashion. Kingston looked amazing for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson vs. Cedar Rapids Xavier football game billed “First on the Turf”, referencing the new synthetic field turf.
I played at Kingston for three years on Cedar Rapids Washington teams of the early 1990s. It was a thrill to play there, especially in …

Cedar Rapids Xavier’s prep football program wasn’t spared from the effects of the rain that drenched Cedar Rapids and other areas of Eastern Iowa in recent days.
The Saints’ sophomore football team experienced a major inconvenience on the way to their season opener against Cedar Rapids Jefferson at Kingston Stadium (which occurs to me to be the ACTUAL “First on the Turf game). According to Dr. Brad Stovie, who helps with the Xavier program, said the team bus stalled after trolling through standing water in the road on the way to Kingston. …
