CEDAR RAPIDS – The start of high school football season sneaks up on most of us in broad summer daylight. School just got started. Labor Day still is 12 days away. But come Friday night (Thursday for Cedar Rapids schools Jefferson and Xavier), it’s on.
The season, however, hasn’t crept up on the players.
“Pretty much, football has been my life this summer,” said Cedar Rapids Washington running back Andre Dawson, who carries the ball and the distinction of being the top college football recruit in his city.

IOWA CITY — Ed Thomas impacted all students at Aplington-Parkersburg High School, not just those playing football.
University of Iowa volleyball players Megan Schipper, a senior, and Becky Walters, a junior, recalled Thomas as a motivating figure and someone who helped them with strength training during summer break.
“When I went home to lift and stuff, I’d always call him and he’d spot me,” Walters said. “He was my driver’s ed teacher, a family friend. He coached my brother. It was hard. It was really hard.”

CEDAR RAPIDS — Maybe we don’t have it right. This could be simply an unnecessary Gazette/KCRG-created frenzy.
Perhaps this whole Cedar Rapids Kennedy-Cedar Rapids Xavier football rivalry isn’t that big a deal after all.
“In some ways, you do have it wrong,” said Xavier Coach Duane Schulte.
Schulte said his coaching staff and Kennedy’s coaching staff get along just fine. Kennedy’s Tim Lewis pointed out the same thing in a Gazette story Sunday.

Sarah Lacina has been a police officer for the City of Cedar Rapids for three years. Friend and fellow officer Tom Grubb, introduced her to Mixed Martial Arts and she took up boxing to help with striking.
