CEDAR RAPIDS — Joey Gase became eligible for a driver’s license this year. Imagine being his driver’s education instructor. considering the 16-year-old makes a habit of zipping around a half-mile track in about 19 seconds.
Gase knows a little about driving, which is displayed weekly as he attempts to become the youngest late model points champ at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
The love for racing blossomed early from exposure to his dad’s career. Bob Gase was a former modified champ, winning in 2003.

Cedar Rapids Xavier and Cedar Rapids Jefferson are promoting their “First on the Turf” football game Aug. 27 as a T-shirt fundraiser.
The game will be held at Kingston Stadium, the first on the stadium’s new Field Turf.
Shirts are $10, and proceeds will benefit the family of Officer Tim Davis, who was injured in an assault while on duty. Jefferson shirts will be Columbia blue, Xavier shirts are white.
