CEDAR RAPIDS — Chad Christensen loves the Yankees. But the spring day he changed his mind and decided not to be one helped make Cedar Rapids Washington a state tournament baseball team.
“I’m just absolutely thrilled that I was able to stay here and be a part of this team,” Christensen said.
The all-state shortstop-pitcher planned to spend most of the summer playing amateur ball in New York for the Bayside Yankees to prepare for a career at the University of Nebraska that begins this fall.

DES MOINES — An irregular heartbeat wasn’t going to keep Dennis Olejniczak from coaching Decorah in the state baseball tournament Tuesday.
“We expected him to be here,” said outfielder Andy Sacquitne, after Norwalk beat the Vikings, 4-1, in a Class 3A quarterfinal at Principal Park. “You know Coach O, tough as nails. He’d never want to miss anything. He was going to get out of that hospital no matter what.”
Olejniczak, 72, wasn’t feeling good Sunday and was taken to the hospital. He has more tests scheduled but said he feels fine …

“That’s the second time,” the Dyersville Beckman pitcher said after he snared a line-drive comebacker for the final out of his team’s 5-4 Class 2A state baseball tournament quarterfinal survival over Interstate 35 on Monday night at Principal Park. “Did the same thing in the substate final against Wilton in the sixth or seventh inning.”
