Former University of Iowa national champion Mark Perry has found a home to continue his budding coaching career. The former two-national champion and four-time All-American for the Hawkeyes was named the head assistant coach for head coach John Azevedo at Cal Poly-SLO.
It appears Perry will be replacing Sammie Henson, who was previously listed on the school’s website as the head assistant for the 2008-09 season. Perry served as an assistant for Troy Sunderland at Penn State University last season, and left the program when Sunderland resigned and former Iowa State head …

Waterloo East senior Kyven Gadson has orally committed to wrestle at Iowa State and new head coach Kevin Jackson.
Gadson, the 2009 Class 3A 171-pound state champion and a two-time state finalist, talked with Takedown Radio’s Scott Casber about his decision. Gadson’s father, Willie, who is the head coach at Waterloo East, is a former All-American for the Cyclones.

THORNBURG – Scott Edmundson was enjoying Adventureland with his family Thursday, just trying to get in a little summer vacation. The Edmundsons were going to Colorado, but those plans got changed at the last second.
For a pretty good reason, though. Edmundson’s Tri-County baseball team edged Burlington Notre Dame, 5-4, in a Class 1A substate final Wednesday to secure its first state tournament berth.
The Trojans lost substate finals from 1995 to 1998 but have finally made it.
“We’ve been close several times,” said Edmundson, head coach since 1996. “For the kids this …

Joey Slaton, the 2008 133-pound NCAA runner-up, has been a lightning rod for rumors and inuendo ever since the summer after his run to the national finals.
Last year, the Hawkeye wrestler didn’t make the line up and was surrounded by discussions of his offseason, or lack thereof, work and weight-cutting issues. Now, this offseason has seen rumors of its own, dealing with his eligibilty for his final season as a Hawkeye.
Slaton’s stepfather, Matt Shaver, would not elaborate on the situation.
“I know he took care of what he needed to during the …

FORT DODGE — Iowa City Regina fell for the rise.
Jamie Fisher quieted the Regals’ offense — which had been so potent through the postseason — and fifth-ranked Conrad BCLUW pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat No. 12 Regina, 2-0, in a Class 2A semifinal at the state softball tournament Thursday at the Rogers Sports Complex.
“Her speed wasn’t really a factor,” said Regina’s Katie Feuerbach, who matched Fisher pitch for pitch through the first six innings. “She threw the riseball, and we chased it.”

FORT DODGE — Jim White said that Moriah Morrissey was getting close to the end of her rope.
To the casual observer, it looked as if she could have pitched all night.
Morrissey allowed only six baserunners — none of which advanced past second base — and top-ranked Clear Creek Amana broke through in the top of the 11th inning to outlast No. 4 Winterset, 1-0, in a Class 3A semifinal at the state softball tournament Thursday afternoon at the Rogers Sports Complex.
“It seemed like she was running out of gas,” said …

CEDAR RAPIDS — It was just the way you draw up a winning rally: walk, hit batter, wild pitch, wild pitch.
Hey, they don’t ask how you did it, just if you did it, and Cedar Rapids Washington’s baseball team did it last night in that unconventional way.
Mitch Dostal scored from third on a Jon Keller wild pitch with none out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Washington a 2-1 win over Cedar Rapids Xavier in a nail-biter of a Class 4A substate final before a standing-room crowd …
