FORT DODGE — Twice, the Mount Vernon Mustangs dug themselves a three-run hole. Twice, they dug themselves out.
Once, they climbed all the way back.
Karly Cochrane’s sacrifice fly plated Megan Cannon in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Mustangs rallied to beat Charles City, 4-3, in a Class 3A consolation semifinal at the state softball tournament Wednesday.
The Mustangs (36-10) fell to Sioux City Heelan, 4-3, in their final game and placed sixth.
Charles City led Mount Vernon, 3-0, before the Mustangs plated three runs in the sixth inning.

FORT DODGE — His body has weakened. His voice has softened.
“I don’t want to say I’m getting old,” said E. Wayne Cooley. “But I will say I’m getting elderly.”
On Tuesday, Cooley made his first appearance at the Rogers Sports Complex since 2002, the year he stepped down as executive secretary of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
“I’m thrilled to be here,” said Cooley, 86, who was accomplanied by his wife Wendy. “It brings back a lot of good memories.”

The senior tossed a complete game three-hitter in a district tournament win over Charles City. He was two-of-five at the plate with a double, an RBI and also scored a run. In three games Briggs batted .467 with two doubles, a triple and scored four runs.

In three games the junior shortstop batted .769 with ten hits in 13 at-bats. He finished the week with nine RBI, scored six runs and had four stolen bases. Tomscha was five-of-six with five RBI and scored three runs in a victory over Sioux Falls Lincoln and slammed a homer, two doubles and drove in four runs in a sub-state victory over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.
