A brief, but lively, debate arose among members of the Mount Vernon rooting section during a second-inning pitching change.
“Isn’t it 15 runs after three innings?” asked one fan.
 “No,” said another, correctly. “Twelve after three, 10 after five.”
 It went longer than that. But it didn’t go the distance.
 Kylea Weber went 3-for-4, and Micah Wieditz’s three-run double was the final blow as 12th-ranked Mount Vernon drubbed Marion, 11-1, in a six-inning Class 3A regional quarterfinal softball game last night at Mount Vernon High School.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Dan Azinger remembers when the only slow pitch softball style in town was the large 16-inch brand of the game.
The sport that originated in Chicago thrive in Cedar Rapids, but now it faces a decrease in popularity.
The Amateur Softball Association 16-inch men’s slow pitch District III tournament concluded Saturday at Kirkwood Softball Complex, and those involved are hoping to rejuvenate the recreational sport.
“It’s not dead,” said Azinger, a 1997 Iowa Softball Hall of Fame inductee. “It’s stayed at an even keel the last few years.”
