The 1950 wrestling team and former wrestling coach Don Briggs are among the 2009 class being inducted into the University of Northern Iowa athletics Hall of Fame.
The Panthers’ 1950 wrestling squad won both the NCAA and AAU team championships, claiming the school’s lone Division I national team title. The team was led by individual champions Keith Young, Bill Nelson and Bill Smith.
Briggs, a former Cedar Rapids Jefferson prep, served as the Panthers head coach from 1983 to 1997. He guided the program to nine top-15 finishes and two 10th-place finishes. During his tenure, …

IOWA CITY — When many of University of Iowa students head home for the summer, many athletes stay in town.
That includes many of the Hawkeye wrestlers, who extend their sport into a year-round endeavor.
“It’s a really important piece of the training that goes into the year,” senior Jay Borschel said. “It’s a time to get together and be around each other. Get some good training in. We don’t have to worry about matches and things like that coming up. It’s a good time to get on the mat.”

Charles City softball coach Brian Bohlen and the staff had not penciled Angela Zappa’s name in the varsity lineup at the start of the season.
Now, Bohlen has Zappa in the lineup on a more regular basis.
Monday’s second game of the Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader with New Hampton showed why. The Comet rightfielder was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored as Charles City picked up a 5-2 win over New Hampton to salvage a split of the twin bill.
