Four great events taking place on July 10 and 11 in Waterloo!
The 10th Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament, a benefit for the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum, will take place on Friday, July 10 at Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo. We still have plenty of opportunities for golfers to participate. The tournament is a five person best shot, four golfers paired with one of our celebrities, and has a noon, shotgun start.
Cost to play is $100. This includes cart, lunch, steak dinner, two drink tickets and a sleeve of balls. Please join us for a great event!
Celebrities committed to play this year include: World Series pitcher and UNI graduate Eddie Watt; six-time NCAA wrestling champion and Pro Bowl offensive guard for the Pittsburgh Steelers Carlton Haselrig; Olympic champions Eddie Banach, Randy Lewis and Bill Smith. Dan Gable and Tom Brands will also be in attendance, although neither plays golf. Others golfing will be: Waterloo legend Chuck Yagla, former Iowa star and NFL player Tavian Banks, Kevin Boyle from the University of Iowa 1980 Final Four basketball team, UNI head coach Brad Penrith and Mike Allen. Amateur and pro wrestling stars Dan Hodge and Baron Von Raschke will be golfing as well as one of this year’s pro hall of fame inductees, Nick Bockwinkel. Additionally, we will have Mark Ironside, coaching legend Bob Siddens, Sherwyn Thorson, and MLB umpires Don Denkinger and Larry Young.
Also on Friday, July 10, Harley Race’s World League Wrestling will be putting on a show at Young Arena for the third consecutive year that will begin at 7:00PM. Ringside seats are $15 and general admission is $10 in advance and are available at the wrestling museum. Tickets will be available the night of the show as well. Doors will open at 6:00PM. This promises to be another exciting event with many of Harley Race’s new recruits performing, including Ricky Steamboat, Jr. Fans will be able to meet wrestling legends Nick Bockwinkel, Fritz Von Goering, Dan Hodge, Harley Race, Bob Geigel, Baron Von Raschke and Carlton Haselrig.
The George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame inductions will take place at the wrestling museum on Saturday, July 11 at noon. Cost to attend is our normal admission price, $6 for adults and $3 for students. This year’s inductees are: Nick Bockwinkel, Fritz Von Goering, Luther Lindsay, Karl Gotch and Bronco Nagurski. Special awards will be presented to Ivan Koloff and Bill Kersten. There will be a social/fan fest following the inductions, which will include several past hall of fame inductees and will run until approximately 4:00PM.
The pro HOF banquet will be Saturday, July 11 at 6:00PM at the 5 Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. Ticket cost is $60. There will be a social hour from 6:00-7:00 and the banquet will begin at 7:00PM. This is always a terrific tribute to the hall of fame inductees, the pro wrestling family and last year’s banquet drew international attention from the speech Bret Hart delivered when accepting the hall of fame induction for his father, the late Stu Hart.
Please show your support of the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum by signing up to play in our golf tournament as well as attending the pro wrestling show, inductions ceremony and banquet. Tickets can be purchased at the wrestling museum, 303 Jefferson Street, in downtown Waterloo. For more information call 319-233-0745 and all events are listed on line at www.wrestlingmuseum.org.
