The Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints staked their claim as the Dan Gable wrestling Hawkeyes of Class 1A girls’ soccer with their fourth consecutive state title last weekend in Muscatine. Kathryn Mettenberg, seen here in the interview portion, scored the Saints’ goal in a 1-0 victory over Dallas Center-Grimes.
On the other side, the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars finally broke through in Class 2A. Senior and Iowa recruit Jade Grimm, also interviewed here, scored a pair of goals in the Cougars’ 3-1 victory over fellow Mississippi Valley Conference school Iowa City West.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union will release its postseason softball pairings Tuesday.
Regionals begins July 8 in Class 1A, July 9 in Class 2A and July 11 in 3A and 4A. Regional finals are July 15 in all classes.
The state tournament is July 20-24 at the Rogers Sports Complex near Fort Dodge.

As the Mississippi Valley Conference softball season approaches its midpoint, the surprise team unquestionably is Iowa City High.
The Little Hawks (10-1 overall, 7-1 MVC) leads the Mississippi Division and holds a No. 11 ranking in Class 4A. They travel to No. 12 Cedar Rapids Xavier (8-3, 7-3) on Tuesday.
City High has won its last six MVC games, its last three by shutout.

Williamsburg junior Austin Blythe is big, strong and athletic, but being so talented has created a dilemma for the 6-foot-3, 280-pound prep standout.
Blythe, the class 2A state heavyweight champion in February and a two-time state finalist, was offered a scholarship to play football for the University of Iowa. Williamsburg wrestling coach and assistant varsity football coach Grant Eckenrod confirmed Blythe’s offer today.
Eckenrod said the 16-year-old will take his time making a decision on where to continue his athletic career and hich sport, or sports, he will play.

Charles City’s defense very nearly gave Garner-Hayfield’s offense enough opportunities for the Cardinals to knock off the host Comets in game one of Saturday’s Charles City Invitational.
The Comet defense struggled throughout much of the game, but timely pitching from Tyler Mitchell and Tyler O’Brien helped the Comets survive seven errors en route to a 7-3 win.
Charles City, then, pitched well against St. Ansgar, but did not quite have enough as the Saints kicked off the Comets 7-3 later Saturday evening for the championship.
