JOHNSTON — The Xavier doubles team of Sean Mathison and Cassandra Chalhoub won the Class 1A state co-ed tennis tournament Tuesday at Johnston High School, defeated the Dubuque Wahlert team of Carter Giese and Sarah Dalton, 6-4, 6-1, in the championship match.

The Xavier duo was 5-0 in the tournament and didn’t drop a set.

This was Xavier’s first state co-ed title, but it was the second state title for Mathison (1A singles champion in 2008) and the second championship match this season for Chalhoub (second place 2A state singles).

PLEASANT HILL — Senior Jess Tomash and junior Parker Linn shot a 2-over par round of 73 Tuesday to finish second in the state co-ed golf meet at Copper Creek Golf Club.

Tomash and Linn, playing in an alternate-shot format, finished two shots behind a Waukee duo to claim the runner-up trophy.

CEDAR RAPIDS — They were challenged in the sixth inning but didn’t capitalize on a golden opportunity. The Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks did not let that happen again.

After not scoring on a bases-loaded, no-out chance handed to them in the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks capitalized when challenged again in the bottom of the eighth inning and upended the state’s No. 4 team, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 1-0, last night at Prairie.

The 21st Annual North/South All-Star Meet will be held this weekend and hosted by the Charles City Mat Club. Below is a press release about the yearly all-star dual and the lineups. Should be fun.

The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee report released two “Informational items” from a recent meeting.
The first item is the most important, and probably the only significant one. The committee will conduct a study on moving the date of the Division I Wrestling Championships. The move will be proposed for the 2013 Championships, pushing it back after the NCAA Men’s Final Four in basketball. It should make it the weekend of the first full week in April, coinciding with the NCAA “Frozen Four” – the national ice hockey championship.

Four wrestlers from Iowa universities were selected to various levels of Amateur Wrestling News’ All-Rookie Team, including three as fourth-team selections.
