PLEASANT HILL — When preparation meets focus and punctuality, the Iowa City West boys’ soccer team is three steps ahead of its competition.

The Trojans cruised to their third-straight state title game with a 5-0 win against Bettendorf last night in a Class 3A state semifinal. It was a domination rooted in the team’s preparation for its longtime Eastern Iowa rival.

URBANDALE — Iowa City Regina advanced to its first state boys’ soccer championship game by dispatching Nevada, 2-0, last night in a Class 1A semifinal at Frerichs Field.

Top-ranked Regina (20-2) plays Council Bluffs St. Albert or Gladbrook-Reinbeck at noon today in Urbandale.

“We’re finally there I guess,” Regina sophomore Daniel Larew said. “It’s a big thing for the school. It’s a big thing for our team just to finally get over that hump.”

This is Regina’s third trip to state. The Regals finished third in 2005 and fourth last year.

IOWA CITY — After spending three hours and five minutes outlasting a familiar foe in the semifinals, Cassandra Chalhoub didn’t have enough left in the tank to upend the tournament’s top seed.

The Cedar Rapids Xavier senior lost to Marshalltown’s Krissy Lankelma, 6-3, 6-0, in the Class 2A singles final of the state tennis tournament Friday at Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.

Chalhoub (13-3), the third seed, pushed Lankelma (24-0) for nearly every point, providing the first challenge of the tourney for the champion.

JOHNSTON — Lindsay Cayton and Hannah Mart of Marion finished fourth Friday in Class 1A doubles at the state tennis tournament in Johnston.
 
Cayton and Mart lost to a Red Oak duo in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2, then lost the third-place match to two-time defending state champions Michelle Schupbach and Lauren Friedman of Waterloo Columbus, 6-0, 6-2.
 
Decorah’s Logan Thompson and Karissa Shindelar finished sixth.
